I love your rig...

I have an '07 GX470 that I wish to buildup very close to this.

I believe you mentioned that you are thinking about adding Lockers (Front and Rear). My understanding is that the Rear is typical Toyota (Don't know the size or comparable truck) but the front is pretty different than the rest of the Toyota line-up, do you know if this is true and what parts are you considering?

We are heading to the Keys Thursday. Maybe we will see you down there...

Go to blue heaven for dinner. Awesome place. I'm up at Sanibel island already but the keys where great. Let me know if you need any tips on camping spots. We found a few good once.

We have a spot at one of the state camp grounds for the week. Wife said it is right on the beach.

I will hit up blue heaven though. Going to get in fishing and relaxing. Be nice to escape work for the week.

The state parks are the best spots so great choice. Blue heaven all week long breakfast and dinner :)

Thanks and that's a great choice of vehicle on your end.

The rear end is a plain old 8" toyota rear. The front is 8,5" clamshell front diff if I'm not mistaking. I am planning on mounting ARB air lockers front and rear and ARB has that for both front and rear. I think most manufacturers have lockers for the GX now. But air lockers or electrical lockers is the only thing I would choose since my truck is my daily driver as well.

Google these terms "Arb landcruiser prado 120 pdf". The first link on that search should give you the ARB parts list available for the GX. Lockers are available front and rear.

BonnerBB,

Thanks for the search term...For some reason I was thinking that Prado 120 and GX470's IFS were slightly different.

You used ARB's front bumper, right? And you trimmed the "fenders" on the GX, could the bumper have been trimmed so that at any point it could be returned to "stock" to make it an easier sale?

I never did the bumper. Not sure if it would be easier slicing a Arb or a fender but had the same thought when I thought about putting a bumper on.

ARB and any other front bumper aside from custom or SouthernSS will require mods that will make it hard to return to stock.

After about 2700miles, 8 awesome days of heat, storms, covered in white sand from the beaches and forest roads of Florida. Scuba Steve is back home in a chilly cold Greensboro, NC.

I'll give you a full trip report soon.

Great build thread that covers mods of all types! Gets better each time I come back. Some really good ideas here and I like that you aren't afraid to cut up your truck! I'm still trying to get there.

Tire Question - Need to pick up some tires to replace my Duratracs. How are the Hankooks holding up for you and how are they for a mix of trail and road use? See you've been on a good number of group rides with other trucks - do the Hankooks perform well in comparison to the tires other folks are running offroad? Also see that you've done quite a bit of road tripping on the Hankooks.

Love to get out and explore, but my truck is also my DD, and I use it for work travel on the highway. Don't mind road noise, but need wet traction and resistance to hydroplaning at speed on the interstate.

How many miles did you get on your Duratracs? I just sold my Lexus with 45k miles on the 285 BFG AT's and they still have another 20k if not more to go. Still rode great and very little road noise. Wore very even. Highly recommend then for double duty as a daily driver.

Well, I did it! Although our "conversation" had me doubting it a little. I am glad I did - glad the way it turned out. You are quite right - that is a LOT of light -- it is almost "weaponized" lighting!! I went with two Rigid "pods" on either end for airing up/down or chaining on/off...although I may re-aim those more for getting in and out and to light up a little more for the driver. You have an amazing build there -- hope you don't mind that I am "borrowing" an idea or four from you?!?! Now I need some time off from work to get this thing in the hills at night!!!

Thanks for sharing and keep posting those pics!!!

Thanks!

Regarding the tires I am very happy with them overall. On the downside they are heavy and side walls are pretty hard. On the plus side they are great on pretty much any surface, they are not to noise (My car is a DD as well), since the side walls are hard they are tough as hell. You wont cut open the sides anytime soon. And they wear very well. Mine has about 7000miles on them and I can see that they have worn at all. So overall a very good tire. BUT I did actually think about the BFG AT's that BonnerBB is mentioning below. They probably wont handle as much abuse as the dynapro but if you dont do much hard core off road on sharp rocks or in muddy conditions than I think they are the better option.
