Magellan Crossover 3.5"

I just received this unit, but having only used it once I can't give a good enough review. So far though I am really liking it.

To start just remember the 3 second rule!

Hold the start button for 3 seconds and done, also I found it to be very quick, however I do not have another GPS to compare!

Magellan Crossover Rocks!

I love this thing. During our recent ExPo Death Valley trip I was continuously impressed with it... we had turn by turn directions on every road throughout Death Valley NP!

We didn't even need to switch it to Topo it was so dead on! :)

When powered on, it grabs the satellites instantly. No waiting 5 minutes for it.

VERY user friendly right out of the box (unlike my Garmin eTrex with its endless menus and clutter...

Mike showed me the upgrade and I agree it makes the unit even better!

BTW, there is a firmware upgrade which changes most of the GUI look and menu layout. I have found I like it even better then how it shipped. It's one way so once you load it, you can't go back. It made it even faster and I think the menu layouts are more logical.

Hey thanks for posting that. I went to the website and found out that I was a couple firmware generations behind (I was on 1.62) and 1.68 and 2.14 have been posted now. However, I was unable to actually get to a download screen to download these updates. Now that it's Monday, a quick call to tech support (really, less than 2 minutes holding), the friendly Indian sounding man said to try entering 1.68 in the confirmation page instead of 1.62. He stated that 2.14 is cummulative and I can "skip ahead" to the most current build. Well, that trick worked for me, I am downloading the new revision now!

However, I have a question. The support pages says that this install wipes out your current tracks, addresses, etc... and recommends backing them up. How do I do that? I have a 2GB storage card installed in the unit, and the Magellan Tools software, but I can't seem to browse the device to harvest my trips and addresses. Does anyone know how to do this? I really do not like the Magellan Tools software, I have played with Unix command strings that were more intuitive than this software!

Help!

Yep, the 1.68 trick is what I found out when I called tech support late last month.

I recall going into a menu from the main one, that allows you to go into the point to export tracks. I don't have mine in front of me (at work currently) but when I get home, I'll power mine up and check it out. I'll let you know what I find unless someone else answers it before me.

Okay, I suck. Got home and worked on getting our new trailer wiring all figured out. Got done in time to meet our friends we had dinner plans with. During dinner we got a call from our realitor that we had an offer on my wife and S-I-L house we have been trying to sell. Got done with that, watched the news and hit the sack.

No plans tonight so I can check it out and let you know. Sorry.

Okay, I have the unit in front of me. This is with the 2.14 firmware update so the menus are relating to the new layout.

From the main menu, select Outdoor
Click the Right arrow at the bottom
Select Options and scroll down to Export Data
Now you can select one of four options, Waypoints, Trips Tracks or Backup all user data

Make sure you have your SD card in the unit and away you go.

You can then import data with the same four choices. IIRC you wanted to back up your data before the upgrade so you might have to poke around the menu selections since it will be slightly different then the new menus. Luckily I did this only a week after I received it so I did not have any data I wanted to keep.

Good luck and enjoy.

Thanks! This worked like a charm. I did not think to look in the Outdoor module to back up ALL the user data on the device, but there it was and it seems to have worked.

Thanks for your help!

Yea! Just got mine in the mail. It's charging right now, but when it's done I am going to upload the firmware update. Do I need an SD card to get started? I dont have a spare right now but I might go get one today.

Happy Birthday to me!

OK, after messing with it for a while, I have two conclusions: Great GPS and Customer Service that I want to cuss about. The absolute worst customer service I have ever dealt with. I have been on hold for almost an hour now and have not even heard a human voice yet. The website must have been designed by a three year old. I am attempting to get my firmware update and the website will simply not allow it. After reading this thread again, I learned that I had to type in 1.68 instead of what I really have, 1.62. That alone is frustrating. Once I had that figured out, I was prompted to create a profile. Once all of my information was put in, the website responded by telling me that my zip code is wrong, negative. I emailed them and called them... no response. Dont get me wrong, the GPS itself is great. I love it, I just hope I never have to utilize Magellan's so-called "Customer Service" again.

Finally got someone on customer service. His explanation was that the website is in a "maintenance state" and that I should try to log about a week from now. Holy Crap am I disapointed. Oh well....

My official review, once again, awesome GPS unit. I cannot say enough about it. Customer Service = :ar15:

I'll have to double check when I get home tonight but I think I saved the update file locally so I could email it to you. Agree about the customer service but they did replace my car adapter due to mine having a bad fuse. BTW, just try to find one of these fuses. :smilies27

I finally got to play around with mine a little yesterday, now this is my first GPS so it definitely can do more than I know how to make it do, but it seems to be a pretty user friendly unit and works well.

Btw, I did not have any trouble downloading the update?

I just downloaded, :bike_rider: No problems here!

Ok Guys,

My brain is mush over GPS shopping. We looked at this unit at Costco today (okay, so we looked at the cardboard picture of it) and it looks promising, especially with the breadcrumbs and low price. One question though.

I have looked at the Garmin 360, and it comes with a rudimentary world basemap with cities and major roads. For example Mexico City has a couple of highways running into a dot :). What does the Crossover's Map look like?

Can someone with a Crossover take a peek at some central/south american countries on their GPS and tell me what they see? Any highways/rivers/borders, or does arizona have oceanfront property ;) ?
