and

the clearance we ended up with came as a surprizing and was awesome, we still had a 1/2 in under the motorbike rack in the picture, whew. these were taken at the last event of the weekend and was a competitive timed run thru an obsticle course. we were pretty nervous to enter, but the staff there were very incouraging. our time thru a whooping 45 min's. keep in mind some hot jeeps and such had times under 4 min ; )

one thing the instructors emphazised that will stick in our minds during our future travels was the phrase, protect your asset. meaning when overland traveling to remember we're out there going from point a to b and not just recreationally 4 wheeling. for us that means bringing our home along as well and be extra carefull with your rig.

thats it

we had a great time and found the rally to be a great place to experiment in a safe inviorment, truck came thru unscathed and didn't touch anything dangerous. we took things very slow and had to take a angle on a couple of humps to clear.

once we got home, we took the camper off and off to pick up a load of feed for the store. i hope to get some pics of this on here soon as well.

we're looking forward to a trip to the far far north this coming summer if all goes as planned.

cheers again lehel and laura

Lehel, that is awesome, having a rig with kayaks ,bikes, motor bike and all the comforts of home go on the obstacle course is what I think of when I hear expedition vehicle! I have a couple of questions.. the under body boxes that are mounted each side of the rear wheels, where did you get those? Do you like them? Also the front bumper, do you like and where did you get it? I believe I read that you have a 2.5" lift on your truck, is that enough, do the tires rub on the steps when the front wheels are turned max and you have suspension compression?
I think there would be some interest in seeing some pictures of the removal process converting the truck over to a work truck, well at least I would be interested. Looking at those pics of the motor bike carrier nearly being scraped along the ground, looks like it could easily be reworked with an angled support bracket to raise it up higher but would that make it harder unload? And if you head north next summer, swing by Vancouver so I can check out your rig in person, maybe we can get a fuso contingent going to expo in April, would like to see Basinrangers rig too!!
again, looking good!

I have to double-post this photo originally provided by Daniel Ruops because it clearly shows the difference in scale between
-- a camper with a GVWR of 14,000 lbs (an EarthCruiser on a Mitsubishi Canter / Fuso FG), and
-- a camper with GVWR of 26,000 lbs (a Ruf Inc camper on a Fuso FM260 with a custom front drive axle).

"Kantabago" -- I love it!

Hi Chip, Trust you to pick up on that. !! Lol.

Another interesting home made (I think) NPS I spotted today down the Gold Coast.

And this one was in today for some wheels . A bus I know, but it was bought to be converted to a camper. I'll be very keen to follow this as there are a few of these for sale at the moment around the country and it could be the start of something really cool. It already had long span/travel suspension , a winch, alloy bull bar, rear walk in boot, etc.

I, and probably a lot more around here, would really like more information on those crew cab rigs, like how many bodies they are set up to accomodate, interior layout, etc. Anyone have any intel or links?

Guess I should have been more specific. How are the cabin's set up, and to accomodate how many people.

I assume if they are using a 4-door truck they have the camper set up for more than two people, but those cabins are fairly small. Maybe they're built by the same company that builds the circus clown cars. :)

Seriously. I have a family of four, and I'm dreaming of traveling internationally with a crewcab/doka/whateveryouwanttocallit, but I'm having trouble imagining me and the three <girls> of us getting by in a camper twice the size of those.

Those folks must have space conservation and management down to a science. Some first-hand intel, recommendations, and insights would be nice.

But that's probably enough of a hijack.

Carry on.

Hi Lynn. How are you? So far most of the crewcabs I've seen on the standard wheelbase have been only set up to sleep 2 inside. You're right >> They don't leave alot of chassis left for a camper body that's big enough to sleep a family anyway. The only way I could see you sleeping a family is if all your cooking and dining was done outside and inside was just bunks , storage and possibly a shower.

BTW Sorry for just dumping pics on without info. If I ever get the opportunity to gain internal access then I will take pics. I did post some interior crewcab camper pics a couple of pages back though.

Kind regards John.

Found this truck at my local TJM store getting some new gear attached. It had an Earthcruser Ute sticker on the front.
One would need a rather long ladder to get into bed.

Cheers
