My perfect vehicle would have:

rail frame system, no uni body.
solid front and rear axles that are strong and easy to service.
part time 4 wheel drive.
transfer case that will be able to use all four wheels or just the front or just the rear.
Manual locking hubs front and rear.
Large fuel tank
Real bumpers front and rear with towing capabilities.
Large radiator
Large cooling for automatic transmission
snorkel with pre-filter
protection for the radiator
no power windows or seats
diesel engine large enough to go up hills but not fast enough to win race.
Good ground clearance
no bling
light weight
everything serviceable
dual batteries.
Solar trickle charge for the batteries.
Rack for jerry cans
power outlets front and rear
not to big not to small
built in roll bar system
Service manual

So a Nissan Patrol GU then

What this thread has proven (without dispute) is you can experience overland travel successfully in near stock vehicles from many manufactures. All vehicles can and will break in due time its up to you to minimize breakage with routine maintenance and inspections.

For me to replace my old reliable equipped Land Cruiser with a close comparable jeep model would be north of 50K. No thanks I will use the excess funds for gas for real expo travel and less web wheeling.

See this movie

A South african wanted the the ultimate expedition vehicle and choosed a Landcruiser 78 Troopy. It is a exelent plattform, but according to him, the ride is terrible, the brakes are bad, it is noisy, the engine is under powered so it will be a costly project to make it good. He had to change the suspension, change the brakes?, Covered the interior vith some special sound proofing mats, he had to turbo boost the engine, and much more.

Before they did have a 3.8 liters engine, now Wrangler and other Jeeps and other models in Chrysler group have the 3.6 liters Pentastar V6 engine. If I remember correct it has about 80 HP more than the old 3.8 liters engine. A Wrangler today have about the same acceleration that some of the old American muscle cars. The Pentastar have
similar performance to a old small V8.

We dont yeat know if Wrangler will have IFS or what Fiat and Chrysler will do with the Wrangler. People just speculate, we will probably know year 2017

Howdy

I found this comparisson, Wrangler with 3.6 liters Pentastar against old muscle cars.

"Here are some numbers from 1960 to 1970's "muscle cars", (0 to 60 and 1/4 mile times)...All I say is that a 6.6 second for a 4x4 Wrangler with a V6 is not bad.

Hi

Some Wrangler acceleration videos from Youtube

Here is a 2012 year wrangler with the slower 3.21 axle ratio and auto. I think it is faster if it had 3.73 in axle ratio and had manual box. I am not used to big engines so I find My wrangler little bit scary with al the power.

guess what its still a minivan engine. my 3.8 gets me around just fine, the 3.6 has its own pile of issues. at least the 3.8 is rock solid. no head problems or such.
