Good job on the carrier. If you don't mind sharing - what was the cause of the fire? I don't want to make the same misstake.

Thanks, was great meeting you guys too, love your 100 series!

So the trip out to GSMTR was a great success. The truck did great. I had to pull winch twice but that was more driver error than the trucks fault!

So many of you have requested a fuel economy check. Well I followed my buddy Joel out to GSMTR - he was in a 3B powered FJ45 and that truck could only manage 55-60 on the highway. So I filled up with diesel before I left and filled up again once we arrived .... 23.6mpg!!!!
I couldn't believe it. Almost 24mpg in that behemoth of a truck!
I never would have imagined that. So at that speed the truck was turning about 2200rpm, I'm now looking into either re-gearing the truck from its current 4.10's to some 3.73's through either sourcing some EU spec gears or through a rubber over drive.

Thanks!
The fire was caused by my own stupidity and impatience. Cutting metal with a chop saw, with a loose spark deflector shield near flammable material. Guarantee you won't make the same mistake. I got rushed and careless - a bad combination

Any updates? Still enjoying the diesel? I'm really curious how it does in the mountains compared to the 1FZ-FE? Just got back from Colorado and have to do a fair amount of 2nd gear at 4,000 RPMs, even with 4.88s.

Wow nice LC Dan! I am in a process of getting 1hd-ft right now. I read that EU 3.73 gears and H151 are make a good deference in MPG compare to AUTO and 4.11 gears. By the way if you still looking for 3.73 gears hit me up here or on mud. I have access to the brand new sets from toyota.

Update: I've put almost 2500 miles on the truck since getting it back without a single hiccup. I had been running some biodiesel so changed out the fuel filter about 500 miles ago, but that's it.
Yes LOVE the truck still and I never get tired of hearing the sound of that diesel puur!

My only complaint as stated before is running hotter EGT'S than I would like to see on the highway. The boost is also slow to come in, and when it does it pegs out at 12psi. I really only notice the "lack" of power when towing, still has plenty of grunt but then my EGT's go wild so have to back off the skinny pedal.
I am going to remedy this with a new custom built turbo by Graeme in Australia. It should deliver up to 25psi but will limit it to around 15-20 for every day driving and towing. The boost will come in immediately which should eleviate both my EGT issue, and my lust for more POWER!
Stay tuned ....

Thanks for the compliment - your going to love the 1HDFT!
Thanks for the offer. I've actually spoken with you about the gears on mud.
I think I'm going to try a bigger tire first, if that doesn't work out I'll switch to the 3:73's.
I've got a lot of expenses coming up with the trailer I'm building, so are going to hold off on the new gearing .... For now :)
Your email is bookmarked!

Great to hear Dan, I've about the same miles on mine. I'll work on my own thread once the summer session is done.

Once you get one Graeme's turbo your EGT's will no longer be the issue:) Who did you source fuel filter from? Did you get a spare starter and alternater as well?

Hey FJ quit slacking and get a build thread going would you?!

I got the filter from CarQuest here in Nashville. I have the part numbe somewhere if you need me to dig it out for you. Yup, got the spare starter and alternator from a junk yard in the UK.

How are you enjoying your 10 second cruiser?! :p

It's been great.

Learned one thing though; an aux. transmission cooler is an absolute must with the auto and I'm extremely happy my halfcut came with the electronic A442F so I was able to install the convertor lockup. I fear I would killed my trans without it while towing our trailer up Nine Mile Canyon road to Monache Meadow.

Interested to hear your reaction to the G-Turbo. I hear nothing but good things.
But... did you ever bump your timing? Or tune your IP? My 1HDFT boost to 15psi very quickly. I'm running about 1MM of advance, and have lightly tuned the IP (reduced the aneroid spring, and turned fuel up 1/2 turn).

I'll post up my thoughts but I expect they will be the same as others - nothing but good things.

I did advance the timing and it worked like you said, although it will still get up there while towing.
It will be nice to have the low end boost, and then turn it up for the trails

Nice

I'm kinda late to the party. It's awesome how far you've taken her Dan! Looking forward to more updates. Please put me first in line to buy her back someday. Too soon? :sombrero:
