I myself do not mess with turbo's but being with friends who each have grand nat; Z06, and a supra watch out for increase boost. The higher you run the higher the risk of busting something!

I don't know much about Turbos and such so I was wondering how the EGTs end up lowering with higher boost? This is totally counter-intuitive to me. Did the seller simply polish the air path or was something else done? Just curious.

This is true, you are putting the head under more pressure, however Graeme (Mud member gbentink) has done extensive research on these engines pushing them to the limit and knows what they can handle.
I know of a guy on mud who has been running one of his turbos pushing 28lbs of boost for over a year with no problems. At the moment Im only 5lbs over the stock turbo so I feel pretty comfortable.
I know EGT's are the number 1 enemy for a diesel. More fuel to the engine = higher EGT temps. Increase the air (boost) into the engine = lower EGT temps. The diesel's can also benefit greatly from adding an intercooler to further reduce EGTs, thats if you want to increase your fuel for more power thereby increasing the EGT's again. Its a vicious circle! :p
I think the gas engines operate the other way around but dont quote me,

I wouldn't run anything crazy as I don't want to decrease my engines longevity, and/or bust something!

Nice!

The Cruiser looks and sounds badassier than ever! Are you gonna just enjoy the way she is for a while or do you have more plans up your sleeve?

Thanks Dave, she sure is a lot of fun!
Well I keep saying I'm done, but then, well you know how it goes!

No real other plans except for some maintenance items. Been hearing some good reviews on mud about Power Stop drilled and slotted rotors, and seeing as my rear brakes are in need of some attention, its the next item on the list. Also will be adding a Walbro FRB-5 pusher pump to help preserve the life of my injection pump, and a couple other little items here and there.

My main focus over the next coming months will be getting my camping trailer finished. I made some good headway on it last year, but still have plenty to do.
In the process of designing a Roof top tent lift to raise the tent above the trailer another 2ft so as to allow the annex to be utilized, but stow-able for towing.
Still need to fab up some awning mounts, electrical system, Spring over axle, trailer wiring, paint .... the list is endless it seems!

My dad and I are planning a 4000 mile round trip to Jackson Hole WY, Yellowstone, Montana, and Mt Rushmore at the end of August so im really trying to hustle and get everything knocked out.

You planning any trips down this way anytime soon?

Sounds like you're gonna be having a blast in August! If you swing through Oklahoma on I-40, be sure to give me a shout (you'll be driving right past my house). Although I'd like to hit up some trails in Arkansas this Spring, the main trip I'm planning on making, is to the FJ Summit (http://fjsummit.org) in July. Just like you though, I have a lot of things I need to get done to my Cruiser before the trip. If I don't make the FJ summit, maybe I'll run into you up in Yellowstone :). I've always wanted to go there.

WOW... Resurrecting a thread gone cold, but I gotta say, BEAUTIFUL truck mate!!!

I love the sound and the possibility of getting over 20mpg in a locked 80 (& FT4WD no less!!!) is SO awesome. I'm gonna have your trucks "little brother" here around Xmas with my 1KZ-TE swapped 2nd Gen 4Runner and this thread has been SO hard for me to read as it's making me even more impatient to get my truck up and running. I still couldn't stop reading though aye :sombrero: I'd love to see all the Diesel Toyota Expo'rs meet up at the Overland Expo one of these years here just to have that many diesel Toyotas in one place at one time in the US (just so long as nobody get's jealous and does anything "funny" now aye lol).

I'm interested to hear that the 1HD-FT is so de-tuned and it makes me wonder if the smaller 1KZ-TE will be the same... Hmmm. Also interested in the EGT's pulling grades esp. since living in Oregon I'm at higher elevation with steeper grades to pull. Think I'm gonna have to run an intercooler or do some turbo work.

Anyway, lovely truck mate, I'd love to hear your impressions of it off-road and how it did in the dirt compared to the gasser. I had a Turbo'd 1HZ 75-series in Australia & I too am a "diesel enthusiast" and I totally get your desire to build a truck like this aye. I'm doing the same myself ;)

Cheers

Hi Dave

Thanks for the kind words :p

Apologies for the late reply. Ive been in on a camping trip in North Carolina for the past 5 days testing out the trailer in preparation for Yellowstone next year.
This gave me the opportunity to not only see what needed to be added or removed from the trailer, but to see how the truck did on the steep grades.

Hopefully i can answer your question about the EGT's ..... while the truck performed well, there were times i had to shift into 3rd keeping to EGT's around 1100F (Max) on the hills. This made me a little concerned about Yellowstone considering some of the elevation we are passing through exceeds 11,000ft!
I too am considering an intercooler in light of this.
Im not sure of the the total weight of the trailer and truck combined - but it has got to be around the 6000lb+ range. Plus there is the additional drag to consider with the trailer in tow.
Whilst in NC I had the opportunity to drive and camp along the NC105 - a forestry road which required the use of low range. I imagine without the trailer it wouldnt have been necessary, but having that extra crawling capability whist pulling an anchor was a nice relief for my transmission.

We filled up with diesel a few times and we did a consistent 15.6mpg
All said and done we tallied up about 800 miles and she didnt skip a beat. The new turbo from Graeme performed exceptionally well.

The Expo idea would be a sight to see - ive wanted to go out there for years but can never seem to get the time - not to mention the 27 hour drive one way!!

The 1KZTE project sounds awesome. Thats a great engine, and with a few tweeks ive heard it performs well. Post a link to your build thread if you have one.

Here are some pictures of our trip ...

Good to hear that the turbo is putting a rather large smile on your face.

I'm currently in Australia punting around in a 1HD-FTE HDJ100R with a few performance mods. The 1HD-FT and 1HD-FTE engines respond very well to boost, fuel and intercooling. The Aussies love to play with these engines and are putting out some amazing figures. A recent upgrade from the Darren at Auto-Craft on a factory 80 with 1HD-FT was punching out just shy of 197 Hp and 500 ft-lbs at the wheels on 33" if I recall correctly. He installed a tickled up turbo and Safari power front mount intercooler then dynotuned it. Not sure what type of turbo it was. I'll see if I can find the Facebook page with more details.

One question on our EGT's. You mention 1100F and I take it that's post turbo? Just and FYI, the 1HD-FTE engines come out of the factory with EGT temps up to 1800F pre turbo when pushed hard and no mods. The lower you can keep the EGT's the better but they can handle the heat reasonably well. The key is to watch for how fast the temps get up to those numbers and not keep them there for too long.

Enjoy the increased diesel performance. These engines are magic but I'm biased. :sombrero:

Cheers,
P

I think your total weight is somewhere around 8,000 lbs, not 6,000lbs!

You know your right - I think my rig alone weighs around 5500lbs!
I'm going to weigh everything at a truck stop when it's all finished :)
