OBDII Scanner Choices

Sounds like I should just go with the $40 Actron CP9410 while I do more research.

If you have codes you need to clear right now, that's what I'd suggest. Or just take it to an Autozone right now and have them read-cleared.

Have to be careful with that stuff. I bought the ScanGuageII expecting all kinds of extra features (engine data, etc.) and most of them don't work on the Rover. I bet it's the same with most of these.

ScanGuage left a lot of the development to the enthusiast community. Basically, it gives you the tools to probe the computer memory banks, but it's up to us to figure out what's where and how to interpret it to get live data. Many other vehicles have guys who are working on this, kind of an open-source project. But for whatever reason, the LR community isn't.

If I knew anything about that crap I would dig into it. I just got a scan gauge because I was tired of driving 20 minutes to Auto Zone to get them to clear the codes. And the last time I was in there the guy told me they have now been told they are no longer allowed to clear the codes but only read them. He cleared them for me anyways since between my mustang and the rover I had been going in once or twice a week for parts or reading codes. Also, Cali state law doesn't allow auto zone or others to clear codes or even read them IIRC.


The SG is pretty cool by giving you the live readouts, leaving it connected all the time, compact-ness and all but if you just want to read and clear codes go to harbor freight and get the cheapest thing they have. I was between the Actron one Tom suggested, the plx kiwi obd2 for the iphone, and the SG.

Edit: I haven't played around too much with the SG, do you know what all data you can pull off the rovers with the SG?

I managed to get the Oxygen Sensor and Long and Short Term Fuel Trim values to output. Those will be really handy. Could not get trans temp to work, which is disappointing.

It does engine temp, air temp, open/closed loop, rpm, and a number of other "standard" things.

I haven't been looking seriously for one yet, but the SG and Kiwi are at the top of the list for now. What swayed you toward the SG?

For me it was the live readouts, and the promise of functionality not delivered. (ie: trans temps). The MPG readout is cool though.
