Overland Journal Project Land Rover Discovery 4 (LR4)

I installed 18's on my L322, I ended up importing a set of 4 from the UK for less than 1000 shipped. Just look on ebay over there and you should be able to find a set.

Great! That's exactly what I'm going to try to do. How did you arrange shipping? A lot of the sellers on there only allow local pickup. I was thinking of taking a little vacation, picking up a set and shipping them back myself.

That's exactly what I was referring to.

Should be interesting, from what I have been hearing "through the grapevine" the "LR5" will be sold as the Discovery in the US once again and will share a platform with the next Defender, while being designed as a more traditional Land Rover model.

Same scuttle we are hearing. Land Rover recognizes the critical connection they have to their past. If they lose that heritage, performance and utility, the party is over. . .

Here is a shot of the vehicle in "Off-Road" mode

And again in "Normal" mode for comparison.

In "Off-Road" mode, the clearance is pretty significant, although departure angle is still marginal. Good thing there is a huge steel bumper back there to drag against. . .

I can't believe the difference in approach angle with the LR4 bumper vs. the Disco II bumper, night and day.

Wasn't difficult I contacted the sellers individually and found one that was willing to ship. PM me if you need any info putting 18's on the MK3.

It really depends on what you wish to do with the vehicle.

Hey Scott,

Thanks for the response.

What I want is not sacrifice the vehicles long term durability or on road comfort for more offroad security and a slight improvement in clearance. The IIDtool takes care of the clearance and the ability to remove suspension faults and overrides the ECUs desire to reduce the offroad lift at higher speeds. Then it's the prevention of flats with better tires but since I don't want my daily driver mode to be sacrificed, I'd like to keep my 19's with road biased tires and then get a second set of 19 inch wheels. My only concern is whether the Cooper LTZs (19s) are a true LT rated tire with a tough sidewall construction. I would go with 18s in a heartbeat if spacers weren't involved (I don't have much experience with them). I don't quite know whether spacers and a wider track can cause any issues in the future with the drivetrain. Do I need to remove the spacers when I put the 19's back on after every trip? I assume it's just 5 nuts? If I can leave them on with the 19's, does that cause any issues or will a LR dealer give me a hard time about any potential warranty work??

Scott-

Have you had a chance to test the factory 18"'s out yet? What was the extent of the modifications? I just picked up a new '13 LR4 with 19's, and I woul really, REALLY like to get a set of factory 18's and a set of MTR Kevlars like I had on my old LR3. If it requires a ton of modification I will probably just bump up to 20's with a set of AT KO's, but I totally agree it would be nice to have that extra sidewall...

A bit off topic too, but how do you feel the LR4 will work as a light duty trailer pulling rig? I have the guys at AT working on a custom flat bed for my dual sports and mountain bikes and I am hoping it will be a good match...

They are welded on the LR4 and now part of the overall structure of the body mount too. It certainly is there for impact protection, but likely to stop the front tire from crushing into the footwell. It only needs a few inches trimmed off, so I am going to torch off the part that rubs and weld in a new plate. Really not a big deal, but seems so with such a nice vehicle :D

Just to follow up on this - The change occured for the 2008 model year. If you look up the frame part number 2005-07 is the same. This big mount thing is welded to the frame on 2008+ LR3 and carried over to the LR4.

I'm running 265/65/18 and it just barely kissed them when the tires were new. Now that they have worn down a bit they clear just fine. If you are running 32" + you'll need to cut and weld to remove a bit off like Scott suggests.

In my experience, the LR4 can tow extremely well. The air suspension adjusts for any weight on the hitch, and I've towed plenty with LR3/LR4's over the years. Only sketchy time I had towing was when I had a '64 SIIA Forward Control on a trailer behind it at freeway speeds - that trailer was walking me all over the road. I was at or extremely close to the 7700lb towing limit (and that was an LR3). LR4 has plenty of motor for towing trailers, and your AT with bikes (motor and non) should be easy work.

The LR tow hitch (the boat anchor as I call it) hangs below the spare tire reducing rear departure angle, and it also makes hooking up the trailers a bit tight (unless you buy an extremely long hitch).

Awesome trailer tow rig. All big body Land Rovers and Range Rovers are impressive tow vehicles IMHO.
