There TeraFerma. I found them googling Lucky8 an aluminum rock sliders. The rasta 4x4s came up too.

Well, maybe you were not aware the tank is in fact available. I have an extra tank and so do some other people in the US. I've heard the Australian Long Ranger tank is available again through another US supplier. You simply need to contact them and spend $2000 or so including labor to make it happen.

Yes, the range is an annoyance, but it is elementary to deal with just like it always has been on a D110, Land Cruiser, etc. Like I said, jerry cans are easy to bring, very affordable, and anyone can accomplish it without any special parts or mechanic by simply buying tanks and putting them in the cargo area. Therefor it does not qualify as a "huge" drawback". Maybe $200 in common parts doubles the range.

However, you cannot just "bring" larger tires and resolve the clearance issues to go with them.

As for judging what is or is not "easy" based on what the lr4 "project" has done to it, the build does not represent everything readily available or worthwhile. It is one idea regarding priorities, preferences, and other factors. Just because this lr4 doesn't have a certain modification does not mean it is therefor difficult or impossible.

For example, I wanted an on board instant compressed air supply with a reserve. So I devised a solution and had the shop install everything. The next person may find almost no use for this feature but it was essentially a simple thing to have done. Same for choosing a much larger 2nd battery than the lr3 project vehicle. I wanted the longest reserve possible given the modifiable space in the engine bay (the factory 2nd battery tray was too small so we expanded it).

The beauty of a thread like this one is to get ideas rolling for all the different people and their own directions. Some people like how clean it is to leave the spare underneath while others don't mind adding that weight to the roof.

BFG has announced the new AT KO2 which will apparently be available in more 18" sizes than before. The one interesting size, also mentioned much earlier in this thread is a more ideal narrower but tall shape of 265/70x18 which will help with clearances at the control arms and during turns. It will be the same section width as the commonly used BFG 265/65x18 but will be 32.6" tall vs 31.5" tall.

Hey - I just got the Long Range tank from outback proven (long range automotive). As indicated before the filler section completely doesn't work as US spec of LR4 have emission related enhancements that require a complete rework of the fuel intake system. I will share my pictures later this week but could you send some of yours? It would be great to compare the set-up.

There isn't much to see of mine because it's mostly hidden or hard to reach. There's basically a dual filler by way of two tubes leading from behind the single oem cap. I have no idea about the fuel intake, etc. Mine was already working on another lr3 before being removed in process of returning his to stock to sell/trade in. He may have had to do modifications like you mention but I'm not sure on that.

Also, I'm not sure if you ended up with the exact same tank as mine. ARB brought in mine and it is NOT the LRA tank you mention (http://www.longrangeautomotive.com....-series-iii-iv-08-on-diesel-aux.html?sef=hcfp) but rather the "Long Ranger" company with the camel mascot (http://thelongranger.com.au/discovery3longrangefueltank2.html).

I will say that the link above to the LRA tank for the Disco IV says diesel only and does not look like mine in terms of the mounting brackets. Not sure what yours is but I hope you can get it worked out. I've gotten almost 1000 miles but 800 is easy.

Land Cruiser always gets more cool stuff than LR3/4 does. There's a tank for under the rear cargo area which ads 47.5 gallons to the factory volume which I think is close to 25g.

Thank you!!!! The differences in the tank design between the manufacturers are not the real problem as it seems that they all fit well in the spare wheel compartment. The problem with instal is that all manufacturers design the fuel flow system for diesel or at best for non-US versions of gas models. U.S. Spec adds different fuel management units and makes the job of connecting the aux tank to your existing set up very custom (you can't use any of the fittings provided by manufacturer). I just wanted to see how your guys installed yours (especially interested in pics of the set up from inner fender wheel as that's where your liquid/vapor separator and carbon canister are located). I will post the pictures of my set up later today

18" LR3 tires on LR4

Hello ALL,
I had a LR3 and loved the larger tires (Cooper Zeon LTZ 285/60/R18, 31.46") on the 18" rims. I now have a LR4 with 19" rims. Can I put 18" LR3 rims on the LR4 without using spacers?

If I need spacers, what changed on the LR4 from LR3 that requires the spacers?

Thanks for your expertise,
Greg

Hi Greg,

Yes, as documented earlier - way earlier... - in this thread, you will need 1.25" spacers (and possibly some very light grinding of the front calipers as there may still be slight contact of the calipers with the inner spokes according to some owners) to fit factory 18" LR3 wheels over the hubs of the LR4, or alternatively you may purchase aftermarket 18" wheels if you would rather go with 18s but no spacers. Only ones I know that fit for sure are the Compomotive PD1881 alloys from the UK. The difference is the brakes, both front rotors and calipers are larger / chunkier on the LR4 compared to the LR3.

Here is my LR4 with the Compos and new-tire-smell 285/60R18 Nitto Terra Grappler G2s.

Hi Scott,
Now that it has been almost 2 years since you did the modifications, how have they held up? Looking back would you change any of the modifications? I am thinking of switching to used LR3 18" wheels for my 2011 LR4. Would you recommend the 1.25" spacers? I live in the NE USA, with the 1.25" spacers, do you have room for snow chains?
Thanks,
Greg

You aren't going to have room for snow chains in the front wheel wells unless you modify the frame horn at the back of the wheel well (assuming you are looking to go with a bigger tire).

Hi Scott,

Thanks for the quick reply!! Do you mind if I ask another question? I found the following spacers from motorsport. Is this what you used? Did you have to do any grinding of modifications to make the LR3 wheels work? or just the spacers?

Also, did you have to cut the factory lug bolt short to fit within the spacers?

I am planning on using the LR3 18"x8" wheels with Cooper Zeon LTX 285/60R18. It's about a 31.5" tire.

I had 2 sets on my LR3 and loved them for on and off road. I currently do have the Johnson Rods installed.

BORA Wheel Spacers Designed for the Land Rover Discovery 4 (LR4) from 2009-Current. These are 1.25" Thick, 5x120mm Bolt Pattern, 72.56mm Hub Diameter and 72.56mm Wheel Centering Lip.

I loved the top gear USA disclaimer in the part III Overland Journal article. The same "professional driver" blew the engine within the first 15mins of our commercial shoot. Luckily it was one of only two models of that car in existence in the US at the time.

The Boras look good. With the spacer, no grinding is required, no stud trimming was required. Bolt on.

Remember to torque properly and check after about 100 miles, then again with very oil change (when I rotate tires anyways)

You sure about that - tested ? I would be concerned that specific tire size at 285 is a bit wide for chains, the RUD chains anyway, even with the spacer. The relatively small width difference of a 265/65x18 could help in this regard.
