Scott-
Have you had a chance to test the factory 18"'s out yet? What was the extent of the modifications? I just picked up a new '13 LR4 with 19's, and I woul really, REALLY like to get a set of factory 18's and a set of MTR Kevlars like I had on my old LR3. If it requires a ton of modification I will probably just bump up to 20's with a set of AT KO's, but I totally agree it would be nice to have that extra sidewall...
Not fully tested, but so far the hot ticket. 1.25" spacers and the factory LR3 18" wheels mount right up. You might need to kiss the calipers with a flapper wheel, but I didn't. I did grind the hell out of one caliper as a test to see if the 18s would fit without the spacers. In the end, it is possible, but I could never recommend or advise it. The spacers really work with this vehicle, especially given how the track width changes on the IFS/IRS with the lift. It looks really good with the tires pushed out a bit on each side, but still aligned with the width of the fender flares.
The 265/70 R18 is a critical part of the system, as the tire is the height I wanted, but still relatively narrow. You end up with a 33x10.5 and a bunch of sidewall and room for deflation, deformation, etc. Just in the little testing I have done on the trail, the truck is transformed. Ride quality is transformed. Traction is transformed. Flotation is transformed. The 20s were just terrible and an embarrassment to such an interesting and well designed chassis. I can now run 18-20 psi and get great deformation on the rocks and flotation in the soft stuff. In fact, the improvement is so dramatic that it shows just how good these trucks are stock, despite the huge wheels and low-profile tires.
Add a few inches of lift, some protection and a 33" tire and you start thinking about doing stupid things with such a nice vehicle. Dusy Ershim anyone?
