OVRLND CAMPERS ONLY : Post your OVRLND Camper build here or a link to your build thread to inspire others!

Did you get your Chubby yet? Did you go barn doors or flip up. That’s the only thing I can’t decide yet on my build. Wish the. Hubby doors opened all the way like,on the regular Ovrlnd camper. So right now I’m leaning towards the rear flip up hatch so I don’t have to walk around the doors when camping.
You'll have to see what's more annoying...walking a few inches to a foot wider, or duck walking in and out of your camper as the hatch will stick out forcing your head down sooner. I have swingouts, and while I had my full barndoors asymmetrically cut to allow my spare tire swing to remain closed, I still leave it open the vast majority of the time. Does it take up a good amount of space under the awning? Yup. Does it really bug me? Nope. And I'll guarantee you it sticks out a ton farther than the upper barndoor section would on a Chubby. It would also depend on how often you're going in/out of the camper. If not a lot...then maybe the flip up is fine.

I’ve never owned one of these style campers yet and I always hear the argument of the barn doors vs. the flip up hatch as the barn door is superior because you don’t have to duck to get inside as soon as with the barn doors as you would with the flip up door. Now I’m talking about the regular barn doors not the full barn doors that go all the way to your truck bed. The thing I can’t wrap my head around is that the barn doors and the flip up door are the exact same height so not sure why you’d have to duck under one and not the other. The only advantage I see with the barn doors is you retain your tailgate standing room and maybe that’s what people are talking about because they go from standing on the tailgate to ducking under the door. That wouod make it hard with a flip up as there is no room to stand on the tailgate. Other than that I don’t see any advantage of the barn doors.

I’m still trying to decide one way or the other. With the barn doors how would you go about securing them if you were taking a load of wood that stuck out the back of your truck? How can you secure them open.

Thanks,

I’m in the middle of placing an order for a Chubby to go on my 2024 GMC Sierra 2500 AT4 truck with a standard bed. Anyone in here have the rear flip up hatch instead of the Barn Doors? That’s the only thing I’m not 100% on. I’d get barn doors 100% if they opened all the way against the sides like they do on the regular campers but they only open to about a 90 degree to the camper. I mean honestly how often do you really stand on your tailgate for something. That’s the only reason I can see having the barn door in the first place but maybe I’m wrong. I still need to use my truck as a truck so if I’m hauling long pieces of lumber I have no way to attach the barn doors to the side as they would be sticking straight out the side. Also at camp with them open you’d be walking around them all the time.

All depends on if you got roof racks or will have a need to sweep snow off the roof. I keep my traction boards on my roof rack in back when traveling and open up the barn doors so I have a good handle in bad conditions standing on my bumper to get the boards. I also place my Starlink behind my vent in the back during setup at camp. So access to the back roof has been critical to me, but that's my setup, if you're not carrying anything up there then probably less of an issue. Also depends on if you plan on mounting anything and what it is on the door. Flip-up would be better for longer, lighter objects. Barn doors better for shorter, heavy things like propane tanks.

Hello! I think we were messaging about this on Facebook! Should be ready within a month.

I believe MallRig.Pro on instagram switched from barn doors on their original build to the flip up hatch on their Chubby.

If you use the truck bed for hauling long items you need the flip up hatch. If you can secure long items to the bed with the tailgate down and barndoors closed that's an option. I have the flipup hatch and like the protection from the rain and snow it provides when open

Plus I have fuel and propane tanks mounted to the camper walls that would prevent barndoors from opening flush against the sides

Securing the doors may be a challenge, but I can imagine some sort of rings/tethers could be attached to allow for them to be tied together against any protruding load as opposed to sticking out like wings against the wind..

And the flip-up hatches will protrude over the tailgate, even if at a steep angle, forcing you to duck down sooner than if you just had to duck under a <2" wide opening. You could stand upright on the tailgate with the barn doors open. Unless the hatch opens up a full 180 degrees vertical (does it?) then you'll be ducking however far it covers the tailgate. That all presumes you'd be leaving the back open at camp. If you're only getting in/out opening and shutting the tailgate every time and crawling on the tailgate, they I suppose that's a non-issue.

I have awnings for weather cover <shrug>. There's not going to be a perfect solution for every situation. Given we're in the rainy mid-Atlantic, that hatch wouldn't provide squat for weather cover :sneaky:

I'm having mine built with a slider placed in the center of the truck on the 70% barn door so it'll match up with the front slider of the camper and the rear cab of the truck. I don't haul a ton of long material that often but I have hauled up to 16' of baseboards before run through the rear cab slider and resting on the dash of my truck.

I originally had my camper built with a flip-up hatch, but after a year of using it, I went back and had the OVRLND team swap that out for asymmetric barn doors, and I couldn't be happier.

I also added the lower barn door halves and deleted the tailgate, and to me, it's perfect now.

The flip-up hatch was fine, and it's not a big deal to move around it, but to me, the real win with an OVRLND camper is having the full barn doors and no tailgate.

Someone recommended these. I cannot find the post.

Nite-Ize has free shipping for a few days.
I ordered some.

I know I am in the minority here, but I have a hatch and have no desire to switch to barn doors. Several people commented on the lack of barn doors in my build, but my wife and I really like the flip up hatch. I can easily stick long items out the back and even bungy the hatch tight against the items is necessary. We do not feel having a flip up hatch impedes our use the tailgate or makes it more difficult to get into the camper. I also like the great visibility I have through the rearview mirror because of the large Tern window we put in the hatch.

We have stronger gas struts than what came with the camper, so our hatch goes to up to about 150 degrees (less so in cold temperatures or if we have the 270 awning deployed). I'm 6'2" and I step up on the back of the tailgate and then duck under the opening to get inside. It is only one step for me, I don't think I start the ducking process much earlier than I would with barn doors. If I need to reach anything on the roof (I too have Maxtrax on the roof), I just close the hatch and stand on the tailgate. One big advantage for barn doors, however, is the ability to mount a propane tank on the door. I had to mount mine on the side of the camper. But since you are getting a Chubby, you should have the ability to put a corner-mount propane tank bracket on one of the back corners.

It is obviously a personal choice, but for us a flip up hatch was and is the best choice.

Congrats on getting the new camper. Sounds like it will be an awesome setup with the AT4! Post up some photos once you get it.

I looked at their website but didn't see full barn doors. Are full barn doors available?
