I did not read this entire thread. So excuse me if this has already been pointed out.
In the state of California, if you are transporting a gun it must be:
1. Unloaded (if a handgun, no magazine in the gun).
2. It must be in a separate lockable compartment of the car OR in a locked case. Glove compartment or center console IS NOT LEGAL.
If you are not in a vehicle, out of any city limits (say on BLM land, you may carry the sidearm loaded and visible. You may not carry concealed at any time unless you have a CC permit.
All that said, I keep an COLT Officer's Model .45 ACP and do have it available when I am camping in an area that I feel warrants it. There are some bad people out there.
