Why, pray tell, are the re-enacting a scene from Capricorn one?

Only memorable line from the film, "Mom was on the roof..."

...Because Hollywood has run out of anything original.

what in the world is corn cob blasting?

ThomD -- it's the opening shot for a tv pilot called Bad Mother's Handbook...the naughty flight attendant/extra is about to put the moves on a young Elliot Gould. I haven't seen Cap 1 for many yrs...I'll have to check it out again since shooting this scene.

Corn cob blasting is a process used to strip wood of existing stain and discoloration by use of gound up corn cobs. It is used in log home restortation (which is what I do) to prepare homes for a new coat of stain, especially if the home is in bad shape or if you are switching types of stains that are not compatible ( like water soluable to oil based). It is done with a specailty Clemco blasting pot, that looks just like a regular commercial blast unit, but is setup to deal with the use of ground up corn cobs. Sand is to destructive to the wood and any sand forced into the wood would draw moisture and cause big problems, walnut medium is also to abrasive. It's safe, so you don't need chemical strippers and the cob is biodegradeable. The house in my original post is 200 years old and was coated in a creosote and linseed oil mixture , the farmers stain mix of choice back in the day. Heres a better shot of what you can accomplish.

The first shot is of a 35 year old milled white cedar home before cob blasting;

And here's after blasting;

This house took me 2 days to blast and about 1500 lbs of cob media. Cob blasting is also use to clean electriacl motors for rebuild and for cleaning specialty tanks like stainless.

Some explanation, This is was during testing and qualifying of our turbocharger test stand. It has oil and coolant supplies that we can regulate the temperature of. It also has a large battery of sensors to remotely monitor & control the whole system. This is fairly early in the genesis of the stand, so that remote aspects were not yet on-line. The turbo on the stand is an off the shelf product, not one of ours.
Effectively this is a low compression ratio, poor performing gas turbine engine.

have to blame the bean-counters and the american people for that one...they only do what sells and stupid people keep watching it. In this case it was just one shot introducing a character and her extra background...but now that you even mentioned it we are doomed to another Cap 1!

the corn cobb blasting is really cool, never heard of it.

I'm in the 600 too, so believe me I know... It's sad that the really fun projects have no money...

I dont have any pictures personally. But I can get some. We are installing a new cell this year, so maybe I can get some progress shots. Its interesting seeing what goes into building a landfill cell.

Including being an equipment operator, Im also one of the ones that runs the wellfield. Responsible for construction and maintanence of the gas collection system and the leachate disposal system.
