Post up your drawer/storage system

FJ Platform Pics

I was asked to post a few more pictures of my platform. The cargo control tie downs have since been moved to the top of the drawer in the previous post. Thanks. Here you go.

You're welcome. Are you headed to Expo in May? Would love to check out your '12 FJ.

Unfortunately no. Work will be hectic for the next few months. I would like to do FJ Summit next year though. I've got along way to go with my FJ though.

For you experts: I am thinking of a single drawer that spans across back of my cargo area, the size would be 37wX10hx29d and would not carry any heavy tools but mainly a couple of pots and pans etc. Is that too big to build?

Depends on what it's made of and how much weight you're planning on stacking on top of it. I have a single drawer that itself slides out and holds a fridge and another drawer on top. It's slightly narrower than 37" but does the job. It's an AT composite drawer.

Even with a 3/4" top panel ( I assume you mean to build it out of plywood ) at 37" width the top will bow down with very little weight stacked on top or attached on top. You can reinforce this edge with an angle, a channel or thick hardwood edge to provide more stiffness.

OK to funny
I was thinking the exact same thing for my FJC to have that lower space for my IGT stuff :)

I finally finished my Platform and Drawer System this weekend. Having an FJ Cruiser has it's value, but there is certainly no room for storage. I needed something that would not only transport my gear, but had to be usable for my job as well. So, it started out with the platform a few months ago, then this weekend I added the drawer which sits on top and bolts down from the inside using hex bolts and T-Nuts. The drawer holds my samples for my job but when we are on our camping trips it holds the Snow Peak BBQ and Cook Set. Underneath the platform is a perfect spot for the Snow Peak IGT Tables and Legs. It then received a coat of Line-X and it's ready to take on any trip. Thanks.

To be honest, it's not an original idea. I saw a platform in an Discovery G4 and knew it would work for the IGT table. It was the only way to get it to fit with my fridge and drawer system I had already had in mind for the build. Plus, it had to be able to be removed on the very slight chance I ever sold the FJ. That's why I also bought the Frontrunner Slimline II roof rack instead of the Baja. I can take it the next vehicle.

just finished base

Used 1/2" birch with slide in area for 3 unit igt table and legs on the left and a slide in area for my mechanics craftsman set on right, behind the tool set area on right I have a top opening cabinet. Moved the JK tie down clasps from bed to sides of the unit. Next will be doing a removable drawer on left with fridge slide on top of that.

Luckily I am not so "space challenged" as many vehicles- 2000 E350 15 passenger van, with two rows of rear bench seats removed. I did need to design it around being able to handle several types of trips, from family vacations to long Baja trips to chasing desert races. I am pretty happy with how it has turned out. I can fit 2 37" tires in the rear section where the platform tops folds up, which was the hardest part to design, as well as 3 large Action Packers, and the two drawers fit all of my spares/tools/recovery stuff. Pics are from various stages of building.
