Question and minor hijack.

If you replaced the automatic hubs on a SuperDuty with Warn Manual hubs, can you remove the vacuum hoses that actuate the stock auto hubs? Do you need to cap them somewhere? What's up if you don't cap them?

Thanks!!

Just cap the nipple on the knuckle, and cut the line/plug it at o near the inner fender well.

I've got pretty much the same truck as a tow rig. Bought it around 96k miles 2.5 years ago. Looks like you're headed down the right road with things.

I've found fuel filters for < $20, but can't remember for the life of me where I got them from now. If I remember, I'll post up.

A tranny temp gauge is a MUST on these trucks IMO. Even if you're not going to be towing, you'll have a decent load and might be working the truck pretty hard on the trails. I got a nice setup of ISSPRO gauges from Diesel Manor for mine. Looks like the price has gone up a bit, but still a very nice kit. Even though I kept a close eye on my tranny temps and ran synthetic fluid, I still managed to smoke the stock tranny last summer. I tow 7k lbs maybe 3,000 miles a year plus daily driving it another 15-20k miles so I'm not really hard on the truck. I put it in a BTS tranny and am thrilled with it. Also upgraded the tranny cooler to a unit out of the 6.0 trucks.

A couple other things to research and maybe knock out sooner rather than later are the UVCH and CPS. There was a recall on the CPS, but since you've been into the dealer I'm assuming that was already handled. The UVCH is the wiring harness that goes under the valve cover (UVCH = under valve cover harness) and it powers your injectors and glow plugs. These are known to loosen up and your truck will run like crap, and sometimes not even run at all depending on how loose they've gotten.

Got a recall notice on the CPS... how hard is the harness to service? Planning on a Magtech 8qt extra trans pan next to keep things cool

When my harness went I didn't have a lot of time to mess with it, so I did pay to have it fixed. It was about $200. Pretty simple stuff really though. The biggest pain is getting the turbo pipes out and back in.

If it’s just the CPS (Cam position Sensor), that’s only about a 10 minute job. The CPS is only $20-25 now down from $100 plus (pre recall).

I was going to remove them and take the foil off anyway, might look into it then - what exactly am I looking for?

I'll keep that in mind for the next time I have to do them. Any link for those braided lines? On one post you said they were dieselsite & the other you said dieselstop...

EDIT: Nevermind - found it...

You may look into the 6.0 cooler instead of the bigger pan. That will drop the temp faster than having a larger capacity pan. It's pretty easy to swap, just need to buy a 3/8 to 1/2" barbed fitting because the 01 has a 3/8 line and the 6.0s used a 1/2" line. The stock tranny cooler is tiny compared to 6.0 cooler. I found my cooler over on car-part.com. $95 shipped. Make sure and have it flushed if you go that route and install a magnafine filter on the return.

I put one on my truck and changed to synthetic fluid at the same time ... I also have a temp guage but do little towing. However, I did notice a significant drop in tranny temp when changing over; previously in the 150ish range but now 100 - 110 degrees f. Also, I changed over both the front and rear diff covers and changed to synthetic. I don't have a temp guage for those (but want one!) though realize, it's just the OCD side of me.

I'll look into that... and I wish the 6.0 Intercooler was that cheap too!

Backed out of the other shell I was going to build my platform off of & have a new idea, essentially making a hybrid utility rack / shell system that will seal up for camping duties, and remain open for hauling & driving. Instead of incorporating an RTT I want to build a flip-pac style add on above that will allow sleeping for 4 (2 up top, 2 in the bed) as originally planned, but a bit more versatile if it engineers out as I'm hoping. I had a rough idea in my head but then saw someone else essentially had a similar setup I liked it better than the shell idea. Its would be loosely similar to this design, but with roll down canvas sides w/windows (& rear/front) instead of diamond plate:

OPINIONS?

It could always double as a taco truck if you needed a supplemental income :wings:

How much space is left btwn? Looks like a pretty good amount.

Once you delete the diamond sheet and add some sort of soft sides you're talking about a Can-Back with a rack, or nearly so.

Some sort of lost...
I know I, personally, would prefer lockable storage. I almost bought a can-back years ago for my ranger, but couldn't stand the idea of leaving gear back there when I'm not with the truck.
