Renegade concept at Detroit Auto Show

Sheesh. I haven't been in this thread in awhile and haven't gone back past this page this morning to see what is prompting Kojack's childish, misguided and misguiding rants. I can say, however, that my '08 Tundra TRD was, by far, the best and most problem-free vehicle I've ever owned...and I've owned a lot of vehicles. The same goes for every single one of my friends who owns Toyota's in Moab. If Toyota made a convertible vehicle comparable to a Wrangler, I would buy it without hesitation. But they don't. If I decide to buy another truck, it will most certainly be a Toyota.

That said, my girlfriend can't wait for the Renegade to be on dealer lots. I plan to help her buy one...standard transmission with the MySky. I tried to talk her into a Cherokee, but she has her heart set on the Renegade.

I simply don't understand the Jeep faithful's hate for the new Jeeps.

The Grand Cherokee, Cherokee, and Renegade were not made to compete with the Wrangler. What they were made for was to appeal to a broader customer base, improve Jeeps overall CAFE fuel economy rating, and provide the best offroad capability in their respective class.

The Renegade will compete with the Nissan Juke, Mazda CX-5, and Mini Countryman, and from the looks of things it will compete well and perform better offroad than the others. What's to hate?

As for Toyotas being more reliable, they aren't. They have their major issues just like anything else.

Toyotas are significantly more reliable than other brands. I own them all and have the repair/service records to prove it. In fact, I would submit that a 200 series Land Cruiser is an order of magnitude more reliable than a Grand Cherokee.

Every platform has its strengths and weaknesses. Jeeps for the most part are extremely capable when compared to other models in a segment. Toyotas are nearly always the most reliable offering in a segment.

There are reasons why EVERYONE in Antarctica uses Toyotas for movement in the continent. They don't just assume Toyotas are more reliable, they know it though research, as their life depends on it.

This is not to say that Toyotas do not have problems, but statistically, functionally and factually, they are the most reliable platform available to the adventure traveler. The one thing that has changed is the gap between brands. Everything else has increased in reliability, also due to Toyota and the TMS. When you tour a Land Rover factory, the engineers on the line specifically refer to "The Toyota Way" for their quality control systems. TMS, Lean Manufacturing and 5S were all refined through Toyota.

There is no argument on this topic, only facts and opinions. The facts are well documented and well known. If you feel otherwise, then you are certainly welcome to your opinion, but it is only that. . .

The hate is simple ignorance and insecurity.

The Wrangler can only exist because of Grand Cherokees, Renegades and Patriots. I hope Jeep sells every Renegade they can make, as it is the only prayer we have to getting one last solid axle Wrangler in 2017. . . These models and line-ups are now a complex balance of branding, CAFE averages, profit distribution and platform sharing. I can assure that the guys at Jeep love Wrangler as much as we do, but it has to be financially and regulatory feasible.

The correct term would be I COULD CARE LESS. and no, the rot does not affect ALL Toyotas. the new ones in the showroom are nice and shiny. As soon as their air hits them, its crumbling to bits. As the official graveyard behind the local dealership states. Its where the 2 - 3 year old Toyotas go to die. And no, the programming issue is not with all Cherokees. I am damn well sure it will be sorted before anyones warranty will expire as well. Just as the Toyotas expire before their warranty too. Yep, hit the nail on the head by trying to take a shot at me with regards to reality. RUST AND TOYOTA is a very real reality. Here we go too about the "REALITY check". Toyotas are 100 percent reliable. Yep. another falsehood. Again, great marketing and BS ploy by Toyota and their owners. Toyotas are no more reliable than any other vehicle. watch out for the INSTANT ACCELERATION and then total loss of braking, veering off the road unexpectedly and other issues that are hell of a lot worse then a little transmission programming issue.

Please again, go back to your holy land on the Toyota forum. THANK YOU! I my have to visit there some time and do the same thing you are doing here. hmmmmmmmmm. Yeah, I think I will. Go over to the Toyota forum, start ****ting on all your supposedly awesome rigs, and say, Im not doing that, im just point out that the vehicle itself is crap not that its a jeep and I wear Toyota underwear. Man, I think most see through your bull****.

Sorry pal but you continue to show your ignorance. The correct term IS "couldn't care less". Secondly nobody ever said Toyotas are 100% reliable, but as Scott has pointed out, check the facts. The fact is they are clearly the most reliable platform relevant to this discussion. Also as far as the 2-3 year old Toyotas rotting off their frames, I guess someone forgot to tell my 20 year old rust free 80 Series, and Scott's 30 year old 70 series. Boy we dodged a bullet on that one. ;)
.
I will again, point out that I am not here "brand bashing". I've owned a driven Jeeps, and I've even said I like the renegade and the new Cherokee *for what they are*. Neither one would be my personal choice and I think both are quite ugly, but that's beside the point and only a matter of preference, that still doesn't constitute as "bashing". To say that by pointing out the very factual reliability issues with the Cherokee is "brand bashing" is like calling it "slanderous" to say that Enron was dishonest. It's not slander if it's true. We are purely talking facts.

How many people can say they got punched in the face by their car!
That alone is reason enough to buy one.

"...honey, I was not in another bar fight. The Jeep sucker punched me... Honest!"

This. There is only so much Jeep can do to a Wrangler to be fuel efficient...it is a brick in the wind (and we like it that way). Thankfully, the government mandates a manufacturer to meet mpg targets as an average across their entire line-up..The Cherokee, Renegade, Compass/Patriot (do they still make those?), etc. bring the mpg average down so Jeep can still make Wranglers.

I don't hate any vehicle in the Jeep line-up, even though I have no interest in buying any of them except the Wrangler. All manufacturers build a variety of vehicles, which allow them to continue to build halo vehicles.

Yeah, they still make the Patriot/Compass. Sales-wise they're doing better than ever. The new C-SUV is supposed to be out next year.

Yes the patriot is an awesome small vehicle. I had mine in places that it should never had gotten into. But it just motors on. I loved it. I should have kept it, and got rid of my Mazda 5. The renegade will perform on par with it for sure. The FDII package in the patriot is super capable. Have a look at expeditions west's test of it.

I'd tend to agree, but then I'm biased. :sombrero:

I would only disagree on the" Hate" coming from ignorance" part of your statement.
Everyone knows ignorance is bliss, not hate...
ROFL. ;)
Otherwise, (imo) you've hit the nail on the head.

How cool would it be for a group of college students to cross the TAT in Trail Hawk Renegades. Maybe lead by some experienced Overlanders who write for a competent overlanding magazine... :)
Would be a great piece of marketing for Jeep.

Well, that escalated quickly... I think the Renegade will serve the purpose of what many of us both in the Jeep section and ExPo require a vehicle to do. While I'll refrain from the Toyota-Jeep debockle of 2015, beacuse I have never owned a Toyota, I find bickering back and forth about it through the keys of a message board rather annoying, frankly unimportant, and a moot point. I do agree with Commanche Scott, I believe that this vehicle might actually be a entry level vehicle for people wanting to enter into the realm of vehicle based exploration.

But hey, that's just my .02 cents....

I totally agree both of the new jeeps will fill the needs of many. And for the Jeep-Toyota debacle......a Toyota was never even mentioned until kojackJKU decided it was somehow relevant, which it wasn't.
.
All bickering aside, I believe that both the Renegade and the Cherokee are going to be seen in masses in all the National Parks and other outdoor recreation popular areas like Moab etc. And like Scott said, that is a HUGE positive for Jeep owners because they will float the company enough that the Wrangler or at least some variant of it can continue to be made. that is not only a positive for Jeep but for all manufacturers that want to participate in that segment as it shows a demand (albeit small) and breeds healthy competition between manufacturers.

Interesting speculation on the KL and Renegade:

"But CarAdvice has learnt that a manual Renegade Trailhawk – fitted with the 1.4-litre turbocharged four-cylinder and six-speed gearbox – could be on the cards, while a diesel version of the Cherokee Trailhawk using the 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine currently reserved for the regular models is also in the works."
