Scoutkid's van is HERE!!!

Took it easy today, got some housework done. But I couldn't keep my hands off Vantom.

Popped the rear upper shock adapters in, rear stainless braided line, spent some time trying to come up with the best idea for getting the F350 ebrake cables to play nice with the E350 system.

And lastly, I got stymied by the damn front brake line. The little 'U' clips on the spring towers seem impossible to get off! Anyone have any tricks?

Grab the clip flange with a medium size pair of needle nose vise grips, give a couple wiggles and they pop right off.

Boy, I tried that and I couldn't get a bite on the clip! I felt like such a dork not getting them on the first try.

Big pair of channel locks, one jaw on the brake fitting, other on both of the open clip ends, squeeze. Never had one that wouldn't come off that way.

Ah ha! I will have to see if there is enough room!! I like this idea. Thank you, Sir!

A Day of Stupid Little Things...

Ever have one of those days where you set out with great intentions and expectations and you get to the end of the day and you feel further behind than where you started?

Thats today.

I set off to the junkyard with a list of parts I needed.

Fuel tank (I want to shorten one and still be able to drive the van until its ready for a Tcase)
Tranny Crossmember (I want to lengthen one and still be able to drive the van until its ready for a Tcase)
Drivers side weather stripping
Mating flange for my 10.5" rear end to a 1350 Ujoint
ABS Plugs...

Every fuel tank out of 10 was heavily dented. Useless. Every tranny crossmember out of 10 was bent. Useless. I found 1 van with decent weather stripping. Bingo. Not one 10.5" in the whole yard. Useless. And you know what is more useless? Making new parts when you don't need new parts.

A la the ABS sensors these Vans use as compared to their Super Duty truck bretheren. See, the tucks have the male fitting on the axle cable. The vans have the male fitting on the system side... Why? I have no idea. All I know is I found a set and snipped them off, now I have the female connectors I have to wire into the brake system harness. Just one of those things...

$5 and this is fixed.

But one beacon of light, I found something to replace my Custom Fake Nonfunctional Vents.

Those should look pretty good on there...

And to cap off my day, I pulled my driveshaft and headed down the road to the local shaft shop. Where, I found out, different 10.5" rear ends have different sized pilot rings on their pinion flanges! Did I measure this before I drove 30 minutes to the shop? NO! Of course not...

So, Shaft Shop Seargent sent me home with a companion flange to try (which of course has too large of a ID on the pilot...) and I left my shaft there so tomorrow I can just call with the correct dimension and he can get me all set up with a new Ujoint/flange combo.

And because I am a Man, I am upgrading to 1410 ujoints, because thats what Men do.

And to right here OH MY GOD. They are massive, and LIVE and not connected to anything anymore, LOL. I ASSUME there used to be a large inverter living in here. I have a lot to learn about inverters, but at least I have some serious AMP capability built in already!!

Interested in an inverter for that spot? I pulled a 1200 watt TripLite out of Ambovan, it's just sitting in my garage. Might take a bit to ship though, pretty heavy. Let me know.

You are trucking right along, I haven't checked your thread in a while, because how far could you have gotten in the last couple weeks? I'll pay closer attention now, good work!

YES if it is a true Sine wave inverter! 1200 ought to run a microwave (figure thats the biggest power draw I will have). Shoot me a PM!

Looks like it may rain a little tomorrow... we will see what all I can get done!

Great build so far, you are inspiring me to get to work on my own and stop being such a slacker.

Are you insulating yours for winter?

That is a fantastic question. I am sure that I probably will, but it may not happen before THIS winter. I was really hoping this was one of the things that had already been 'done' by a previous owner, but living its life in New Mexico turns out it wasn't a priority...

Thanks for the note, now go get to it! :D

Does anyone know if the diesel E350 and the gas E350 gas/diesel tanks are the same?

Yes they are the same but make sure you get them from the right "era" i guess is a good word for it...

I had my crashed vans 96 fuel tank shortened and ready for my 97. Only to find out that 92-96 are the same tank. 97-01 i believe is another tank. Then i assume they differ somehow after that. The only difference i saw was the evap vents/roll over vents have changed slightly and the 96 fuel sending unit is held on with a locking ring, but the 97 has 6 bolts holding the fuel sending unit to the tank.

Just some differences to look out for when combining vans.

Great build though. Your an animal and blowing thru this 4x conversion really quickly. Your making toolman and i look bad, hahaha.

With a name like scoutkid... How old are you? If you dont mind me asking. Ive been wondering how old people are, that have/are building 4x vans.

Good info on the tanks, I may just need it in my back pocket!

It seems like this is taking FOREVER! I just want to drive it! :) It helped that I had most all the parts sitting there waiting for the conversion, too.

Funny story about the moniker; when you are 15 and need help with windshield wiper wiring on your Scout, you jump online and create a profile and don't think that it will stick with you 14 years later... :)

So as a brief introduction I am 29, live in Golden, CO where I went to college. Grew up on a ranch in Larkspur, CO (hence the propensity for driving farm equipment around, and pretending they are 'regular cars') Have owned no less than 20 scouts, a few travelalls, F250's, 350's, gas, diesel, you name it.

I have thought about changing the name to Scoutalmostaman, but I am on a LOT of different forums and that would be a lot of effort.
