Scrubber3's long overdue build thread

Had to lube the slide bolts on the Left Rear caliper today. Somehow a bit of salty water must have gotten into the channels over the winter. I noticed that it didn't quite feel right and I caught it way before it had a chance to cause any problems....

After nearly 196,588 miles my transfer case has shown it's age. While riding the trails at the Cove in VA going uphill through some rocks it started to grind. After that the popping started and then it just let loose. No go...... Put it in park and back to drive reset it and I was able to make it down the Mountain and all the way home which was 2 hours away. (Thanks to Tim for the assist home and the invite out. The man is a Class Act.) After careful diagnostics I confirmed it was the definitely the transfer case. I ordered one from NY and it should be here by the start of next week. Anyone know if the transmission HAS to come out to get the transfer case out? Doesn't look too bad, but without a lift it could pose a problem. Might be the first time someone else will get the chance to turn a wrench on my rig.

Thanks for the kind words. Your little truck is a beast and you wheeled it expertly. It went everywhere the big trucks went and without complaint... and even the limb risers got a workout! Sorry to hear about the T-case; maybe we can help you out.

Got the transfer case in today. Taking it to the Pig tomorrow to have them replace it as I don't have a lift or the back to do it right now.

When you get the old one out and the new t-case in, give us the biopsy. I wanna know what could've went wrong. Mainly because I'm about to pass 200k, and need to know what to look out for.

Will do, just keep in mind that mine has been through some punishment. 25* climbs while going over rocks and stuff like that. Also, I don't think the prior owner ever changed the fluid. On second thought.... He didn't because their was still factory tamper seal on it and the consistency, color, smell, and fluid level back that theory. It could have been misused some before as well.

Dude, that totally blows!

The good news is, if you get a good replacement, you will be set for life assuming you do the recommended maintenance.

Yeah, I've got one sitting in the back right now awaiting install. It's getting new 75 90 in it upon installation. I change drivetrain fluid once a year regardless of wether it needs it or not. I check the condition after every other time I take it out. I'll be flushing the transmission upon transfer case replacement as well. I lucked out and found the transfer case with 80k miles on it for 85 dollars. Looks great on the outside. Hopefully the inside reflects this. Shipping was only 100 bucks, so for less than 200 I got a quality replacement. Sucks I don't have the resources to R&R it though. Probably cost 300 in labor around here. :(. I could do it easy if I had the stuff, but to buy it would be more expensive than to just pay someone so..... Too bad I cannot just use someone's shop.
