Sure-Fire Ways to Improve Your Roof Top Tent

Are you like me and don't tried of your Travel Cover hanging down in the dirt (or blocking your door)?

Here is my easy fix for a Tepui with Velcro travel cover strap. Make a couple of straps about 12" long with D-rings on the end and screwing them to the base. The D-rings attach to the Velcro end of the travel cover straps and hold the cover up.

I forgot to post up my RTT upgrade. I really didn't care for the cinch straps holding down my cover. I ordered some strapping online along with some adjustable buckles. I have been using them for a coupel seasons now and they work quicker/better/faster/prettier/etc. I just had my old boss (I work at an upholstery shop) sew up the ends nice.

Like it, the double D-ring style cover cinch straps can be a pain to get undone when wet.

I followed your lead and started with some inch wide cam buckle straps from Harbor Freight. I added two more to go over the area of the ladder and stop the cover from ballooning up while I drove. I ordered some higher quality 2 inch wide straps with UV resistant material and will be installing those soon.

Did you order these 2" wide straps from Harbor Freight as well? I am looking for a 72" elastic velcro type strap and am not sure where to find one?

I'm always looking at things to make them better. I haven't seen any company as of yet come up with this idea and I'm actually pretty suprised. Every roof top tent inevitably sits up high and has a clear view of the sky. Most people who use roof top tents usually have an "overland" or "expedition" mindset. I can guaruntee that a percentage of those people run rigs with solar panels. Now, when the RTT is mounted (usually on the roof or trailer), there is almost no extra space to mount solar panels on the roof, roof rack, etc... I'm sure the percentage of people who use solar panels while they are driving is very low, but when at camp is steadily growing. The space is already used so why not integrate it into the RTT cover? There are flexible solar panels hitting the market already. Actually, you wouldn't even need flexible panels as hard ones have made there way into backpacking sized foldeable units with fabric sewn around the edges (i.e. Goal Zero). When the vehicle arrives at the campsite, the cover could be removed and set it to the side on the ground to continue/start collecting sunlight.

I don't know. Just an idea. I won't be mass-producing this as I'm only building a small prototype "strap-on" style for me to use. It will essentially strap over a rtt cover when I get my RTT. It will allow me to charge my aux battery when the vehicle is not running and tent not deployed OR deployed. I think it's a slick idea. Wish I could market it, but there's no way.

I sent en e-mail to CVT to get feedback on the idea. No reply yet.

I toyed with something similar for my Eezi Awn RTT. There were two options I drew up:
One where an extra layer of clear heavy duty plastic was added to the RTT cover allowing the panels to slide in (hard or foldable ;ideally powerfilm)
The other cuts out portions of the top of the RTT cover and uses clear plastic in those areas allowin the panels to nest inside the aluminum channels, keeping the original profile of the RTT and better protecting the RTT panels.
Sadly this has taken a back burner to other projects but I'm looking forward to seeing it come to fruition for someone else or myself.

Great ideas all. We are about to head out on our "RTT Shakedown" run. It's our first time in the RTT so we'll have a head start on the mods before we ever get out there.

I have had LED lights for a while but I didn't like the switch that was on the power cord. I also needed a USB outlet and just in case a standard power port. I found a resin box that was just about the right size and got the outlets from West Marine and added some switches that I already had. The main power switch is lighted and I figured it could double as somewhat of a night light. I added a switch for the LED lights, and one that powers up the outlets. My power supply can come from the 12V car battery or from the Aux. battery.

I think it will work just fine if I don't roll around too much !

Pretty neat. I am thinking of doing something similar.

Rattlet, where did you find that resin box? I like your idea. I was planning to put the switches on the tent floor, but was worried on roling in to them while I sleep.

Very nice.
I had a box similar that I got at Radio Shack for a roof top tent project was working on a few years ago.
