I won't recommend a specific tire (though I was very happy with the Geolander AT/S tires I put on my Tacoma) but I will say this: Go to your local Discount Tire and ask them for a price quote on a specific tire you like.

Then, after they give you the price quote, tell them thanks and that you'll keep shopping around. If they're like the ones around here, they WILL start cutting the price at that point. Bottom line, never take Discount Tire's first offer, they will always go lower. Just a word to the wise.

I'm very happy with my tires from Discount. We've got a Discount Tire less than a mile from our house which makes it convenient for rotation, flat repairs, etc.

IMO their total replacement warranty is a waste of money. Just get the regular warranty (that is built in to the price of the tire.) That gets you flat repairs and replacement on a pro-rated basis.

Here's some test info from Consumer Reports:

I had Revos for about 25K and they were decent tires while they lasted but didn't last very long and they didn't have a lot of bite in the mud. They were very smooth on the road and did great in the rain however. I have had much better luck with the BFG AT's than the Revos. The wear I have gotten out of these tires is more than I thought I would and sometimes better than I wished seeing how I would like these to go so I can put some MT's on.

I went with some Hankook ATM's I have a impressions thread going, they'll be fully tested (by me) within about a month.

My Revos were finally swapped at 59,900 miles, about 5000 too soon because Firestone had a 35% off deal that I just couldn't pass up.

I rotated every 5K to 6K miles which is normal care for any tire.

My '04 DoubleCab is going to need new shoes in the spring too. I have been running Kumho Road Venture MTs for the last 3 years/35k. For a mud tire they have pretty decent road manners. They did start cupping on me this past spring because my lazy butt forgot to rotate them. I got them for $128 each (32x11.50x15) through Discount price-matching the Tire Rack. After my last trip to Discount with the wife's Escape in need of tires I probably won't go back. Belle Tire beat them by a long shot. I don't think I need to drive back and forth to tire stores to get a deal.

Anyway, my candidates:

Toyo Open Country ATs
Cooper STTs
General Grabber ATs

Belle has the Sport King and Mud King from Cavalier (made by BFG) and they are cheap. $125 for a 32x11.50x15 for the Mud King and they wear forever but I don't think I am going to go with them. I did have a set of Sport Kings on my old Toy and they had over 100k on them when I sold them and they still had many miles left on them.

I may go back to the "16 stock wheels if I get ambitious and paint them black over the winter. I think I will go with a 385/75/16 if I do that. I got a little rubbing from the "32 MTs with a "2.5 coilspacer lift. I figure I will get a little more clearance with a tamer AT.

If you want Coopers again, they are having a fall rebate on ATR's, ST's, STC's and STT's...looks like I bought mine about four months too soon!

For what it's worth I have 33x10.50's (BFG AT's) on my 1st Gen and I LOVE them. Yes I need to re-gear but it's not nearly as bad as I though it would be. I think they really make these trucks dicidedly more capable then the same truck on 31's. You will lose effiancy untill you re-gear, but boy do these trucks go well off-road on 33's...

I would get Goodyear DuraTrac.
I'm still kinda curious why this tire isn't more popular around here. It seems to really nail the whole "XT" or "hybrid" tread pattern perfectly. I've read tons of posts from many different forums online, and for the most part they seem to be very positive, with one exception - claims of weak sidewalls.

From what I've read, the people that complain about the strength of the sidewalls usually make one of two claims:
- They have too much flex on large trucks (F-250, F-350, etc)
- They are weak when compared to mud tires like the Goodyear MT-R Kevlar

The first claim doesn't really apply that much to guys driving Tacomas, 4Runners, etc, as there's a huge disparity in GVW compared to an F-350. The other claim, in my opinion, is a little unfair. Of course this tire is going to have a weak sidewall compared to a true mud tire, particularly one reinforced with Kevlar. Anyone that buys an AT expecting to have the sidewall strength of an MT is setting themselves up for disappointment. This tire seems like a great fit for someone that needs good road manners (it meets European Commission noise requirements for pass-by noise) but also wants to drive in mild to moderate offroad conditions (including winter conditions; it also carries the mountain / snowflake symbol and is set up to take studs). I wouldn't put it on a dedicated rock crawler, but for a DD / weekend warrior it looks like a good option.

I was going to say you should look at the Hankook ATM RF10's, but unless you can get Discount to do an internal price match they are way more expensive for you than they are for me. If you are interested then print out this link, which is for San Angelo, TX 76904, and see if your local Discount will price match there own price. The tires there are $110 a tire vs $178 a tire in San Diego, or $124 a tire in Olympia. The guys at my store were pretty high on these tires, especially at the price! They can't keep em in stock around here, they had to order my tires.

X2 I really like the look of these tires.

Honestly... I'm not such a huge fan of the Toyo AT... Fairly "street" oriented of all the AT's. They make my BFG's look and go like Mudders and they cost an arm and a leg comparitivly... not really sure why they get such high marks. But that's my opinion so take it for what it's worth.

There's another thread about these Interco AT's that look AWESOME.

My personal list would be:

-BFG AT's
-Maxxis Bighorns
-Interco's new set of AT's... The SS-M16 here's the link: http://www.expeditionportal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=32404
-KM2's with alot of siping. These tires are a GREAT all arounder IMO when siped correctly

Personaly I stayed well away from the Revo's and Toyo's because of the less agressive tread and some reports of excessive hydroplaning due to low tread void space. Others here have had great luck, but I have a suspission that's due to drier climates/trails. That makes alot of difference for how a tire works. The NW is alot different then say AZ and as such requires a little different rubber on the average day.

Cheers
