Front and rear diffs installed.
The rear whines. How much whining and noise is normal for new gears? Any?
The front is silent

4.88's, ARB locker.

I never had a whine from either one of my diffs. Since it is the rear, maybe give Zuk a call and see what he says.

My initial thought is none! Make a call to whom ever set up the gears before driving it any further.

Definitely get a hold of the 3rd member setup guys right away. I'd try to minimize driving until they can hear it on a test drive.

If you are not satisfied with their response, take it by Zuk and see if he'll give you a 2nd opinion.

Thanks guys. Taking it back to the original shop tomorrow mid day and then down to Zuk tomorrow night if they don't want to fix them for me. One way or another it will get done right.

I'm so glad I live in the same town as zuk.
I took the truck back to the shop. They installed a solid collar and said, its as good as its going to get.
I pulled the third last night and drove to Zuk. He took a look at it and the teeth were barely grabbing each other. I know they did their best job, but something about toyota gears must be a pain...
Zuk is going to take it apart and set it up for me.
Now the front... well it doesn't make any noise, but when I saw the rear. I feel like I need to get it checked out to see how it is. I'm worried.

ZUK has saved more of us then.... well, something that has saved a lot of people. Like maybe penicilin or that movie "The Big Lebowski".

I am not sure where I was going with that, but ZUK is a GEAR GOD for shizzle.

(Now we just have to get him to start doing front IFS diffs... or maybe it's a sign for you to start an SAS. :xxrotflma )

Your evil!
Maybe I can be the first to do a conversion to a nice and low coilover front solid axle some day.

:Wow1: Glad they caught that, it'll not last long like that on the trail.

Actually Toyota Gears are some of the easiest to do. Regular axles (and the front) use shims. They are a pain in the butt to set up. If they screwed the back up I can about guarantee the front is screwed up as well.

Grim,
I'm sure you're right. I just know that this shop and the gear guy are good people and did their best. I think I was saying Toyotas are hard, because thats the feeling I got from them. He swears the pattern was fine when he put it together. I just think they hadn't done any Toyota diffs yet. The desert racing world is all about ford 9 inch.
Not that it makes it okay.

I just saw some pics from Zuk showing a great pattern. I'll post them after its all done. I'm so excited.

Anyone want to spend an hour pulling a front diff? :victory:

When I regeared, err... when I helped Goodtimes regear my truck I meant, the rear went fine, but the front needed some side shim adjustment to get everything right. Not sure of that helps, just a FYI...

Ursidae69, Any info helps. Although I'm not brave enough to do the front. I may be brave enough to check the pattern and if its okay leave it alone...

Might as well bring it back - haven't even put the tools away yet!

I don't know. Anymore free labor or space rental and I will have officially overstayed my welcome! :bigbossHL:

I won't even come by unless you tell me how I can repay you. :lurk: :clapsmile

Other than lacking the removable pinion carrier Yota 8" drop-out diffs are very similar to Ford 9" drop-outs. Never had one of the IFS fronts apart though.
