"TrailTop" modular trailer topper building components

I don't know about putting rollers on the bottom of the box, that might make it hard to secure to the trailer in a way that prevents movement of the box on the trailer when in motion.

The real expert in building small camp boxes like this is Scott Chaney, who owns Compact Camping and runs the Tventuring forum (http://tventuring.com/trailerforum/index.php). He's done a book on building "Explorer Boxes" (https://compactcampingconcepts.com/explorerbox.html) that provides step-by-step info. You might want to check out the resources he's got and the threads on his forum about camp boxes like this.

sorry for the very delayed response. just saw your post.

I was figuring on strapping it down with tie downs the same way bikes are tied down.

I would love to be able to purchase a set of these white 12" radius fiberglass moldings so that I could make one of these Trailtop campers. The plan would be to put it on a larger utility trailer and use additional straight pieces to extend both the height and length in order to fit bunks for our grandkids. We do not want sink/stove/shower etc. so I really think we could do the work ourselves. Basically we want a sturdy rectangular 'tent' that doesn't sit on the ground. We currently own a TAB Trailer that we took cross country last fall. We live in the north east USA.
Will these white edge pieces be available for purchase in the near future?
Would you be interested in selling us a set if we document the build process for you along with photos?
Thank you,
Cathy

Cathy,
Back when I was building the first prototypes using the TrailTop components, two companies approached me saying they were interested in marketing the components, but as it turned out neither one decided to go ahead with bringing the system to market. I've still got the molds, but really haven't had any time to do anything with them since then. At this point I'm not trying to find a company to sign up for the system, I'm busy with other projects, sorry.

jscherb, If I understand it right, you're not for hire... I'm wanting to either possibly purchase or build something like your design for a 5x8 landscape trailer/removable camper. Is this something you or someone has actually designed that a DIYer could do or is their now parts to purchase to construct this? Or is there one for purchase from someone you would recommend? I'm pretty handy but I don't think I could do this from scratch.

That's correct, I'm not in business or for hire, I just design this stuff and build prototypes as a hobby. The only way things I design become commercially available is if a company takes them on. Lots of my designs have become commercial products and are currently on the market, but the TrailTop system has not yet.

The TrailTop system was specifically designed for people like you who are "pretty handy" - the idea was that an average DIY-er with no exceptional skills could successfully build a camper/trailer with TrailTop parts and not have it look homemade. The design goal was professional looking results built by an average DIY-er.

I've still got all the molds, so if I decide to make more parts I can, but in the time since I finished up the TrailTop prototypes I've been busy with other projects so I haven't paid more any attention to the TrailTop system. If a company is interested in bringing the TrailTop system to market I'd be happy to talk to them about it.

I don't speak French, but Google translates that as:

Hello I would like to know if there are plans for this trailer topper Thanks

There are many drawings throughout this thread showing different campers and toppers that can be made using the TrailTop components. For example, the TrailDog design shown below seemed to be very popular in the thread. Many of the drawings include dimensions; some do not but the idea with the TrailTop components is that you can make the camper to whatever dimensions suit you because the components can be adapted to pretty much any dimensions.

Detailed plans with dimensions for that camper concept are not available at this time. If the TrailTop fiberglass components necessary to build it do become available for sale, then plans would be available for it.

Re. The 3 trailers at the top of this site. (Black, green, yellow) trailers. The lid on the green trailer...... Did you make that lid? That's the lid I need for my trailer. Your input is appreciated.

Mark, I believe the build was posted here on EP, and post #616 was asking about interest in the different models.

What I get out of the marketing side and the commercial intent is that Jscherb is the designer, apparently with no desire to go into manufacturing and I don't blame him.

Getting a patent on a design is costly and often a home builder can pretty much copy a basic design without any commercial purpose and the patent holder has little recourse. Designs can often be modified where there is no patent infringement. The design of a jeep bucket is probably an issue with jeep, but there are knock-offs modified, perhaps to size, that are a non-issue, so long as they aren't specifically copied.

I like the idea of selling the trim kits, when a designer gives specifications to build something and those instructions are followed, the designer takes on a product/design liability. That can mean costly insurance and being in business means licensing and in some cases`product testing to meet safety requirements.

The "pod" concept is pretty much in the public domain, unrestricted idea, the military has used a pod system in many applications for over 100 years, so it's not new. I'm starting on a "pod" and component approach, I don't want a dedicated camper vehicle or trailer for many reasons, not practical to have my garages loaded with seldom used toys. Multi-tools are great, none work as well as the dedicated tool but they are handy when you need them.

If you're stumped on finishing edges and corners, look to other products, tubing, extrusions used by manufactures, find salvaged existing parts then adapt those to your design. PVC is great stuff, heated it seals, can be faired, bent and connected and lots of materials can cover that. Metal too.

This is a great thread and wish all the best to the commercialization working out.

Mark,
Are you asking about this lid?

WithRetro3_zps6c77f0f3.jpg

Yes, I made it, it's fiberglass. Here's a photo before it was painted. It's molded in two identical halves that get bolted together in the center (or could be hinged in the center).

CoverTestFit2_zpsc4ce154b.jpg

I covered the construction in this thread: http://www.expeditionportal.com/for...lass-M416-M100-Military-style-Trailer-Tub-Kit

I still have the mold in the event some company/person ever wants to explore the idea of turning the lid into a commercial product.

Recently I've been working on a chuck wagon/cargo topper for my military trailer. It's a pretty simple design in plywood that goes between the tub and the fiberglass lid. The topper doesn't use any TrailTop components because it's just a plywood shell with right angles at the corners, and the same fiberglass lid that's always been on the trailer goes on top of the topper.

That project has gotten me to thinking about increasing the cargo capacity of my Jeep-tub trailer. Two years ago I built a lid for it using TrailTop components, it's served very well:

JeepTubLid_zpsj2ms4ryb.jpg

I'm thinking of using the same concept for this trailer that I did for the military trailer - a simple cargo topper that goes on top of the tub and the same lid goes on top of the topper:

JeepTubCargoTop_zpsppyjb23y.jpg

Because the Jeep tub has curved corners, the corners of the topper would be made from TrailTop sections, which match the curves at the tub corners. I've left the plywood and the TrailTop components "unpainted" in the concept above to show how the parts would go together. Probably I'd paint everything with the same brown acrylic deck finish that I did the lid with.

For this trailer I don't need the "chuck wagon" compartments, but here's a concept drawing showing what they might look like too...
