Utah: The Maze District - A Family Affair

Geez - were you able to tow your trailer down the Flint Trail? I took my 06 Tundra down it last spring, and had managed a couple of four point turns, though coming back up I only had one - I would be impressed to know if someone took their trailer down it?

No problem towing the trailer down the Flint Trail....There are a few spots were you are require do a 3 point turn taking the rig out of 4 low into 2 high (wish i had 2 low) to make the turn easier. Coming from the Teapot campsite....there is one turn on an angle that was pretty fun!

Having an offroad hitch like the lock n' roll or pintel is a must! Keeping your hitch greased is key!

Hilary was not pleased with the idea we were to break camp every night and move to a different spot. I have to give massive amounts of kudos to both Hilary and Hailey for doing the most difficult part of the trip-ensuring two kids' comfort and happiness.

I know that for myself, I was focused on driving, oogling over the scenery, and taking 500 pictures that I wasn't able to be as attentive to Zander and Olivia as I would have liked to have been.

After a long six hours being jostled around in the cruiser, we came to one of the open campsites, The Wall. The sun was setting, and as I was in the lead, with Nic and KC a bit behind me, I jumped out with the kids and started snapping photos. Needless to say, it was a stellar campsite. We all agreed that was a good choice for the night.

Interestingly enough, Nic and I took virtually the same photo:

We thought we ought to have a photo of the family for Christmas cards, so thanks to Nic for snapping this one of us:

The sun was rapidly setting, and we still hadn't seen KC. When we heard the throaty exhaust and the whine of the supercharger, we realized he was close.
He and Mia informed us they had not only one but -two- (gasp!) flat tires. Neither were blowouts, and the bead remained intact, but required stopping and adding air. We were grateful that it wasn't any worse.

Needless to say, the area is beautiful. I took a few more photos before getting camp set up for the night, and enjoying the company of great friends.

The night was much warmer than before, with a virtually full moon, and perfectly clear skies. I was able to walk around and do what I needed to do without the aid of my headlamp.

After everyone had gone to sleep, I spent some alone time catching some moonlight, and enjoying that peaceful silence of the desert.

I also briefly read through the new Overland Journal which conveniently came in the mail the day before we left town...

I awoke in the morning to the sound of two sides of velcro being separated from one another...it was KC, up to get some early shots. I decided to join him, and catch the sunrise.

At any other campsite, this dead tree would have become firewood, and I wouldn't see this:

After a short time, Alexander woke up and began taking in the sunrise with us. It was a quiet morning, few words were spoken, as few words could appropriately capture what was being experienced...

I stuck my head inside the tent to see Olivia sound asleep. She looked so peaceful, so content, I had to snap a photo:

She must have heard the shutter, and she opened her eyes:

It took her a minute to fully come awake, and she gave me a smile that just made me melt. I was overwhelmed with love only a father could have:

She continued to come awake, and began stirring. Mom woke up, but after seeing the camera, hid herself under the cover of the sleeping bag. I went to the other side of the tent and opened it, allowing both of them to get a glimpse of the morning light blanketing the desert landscape. I think it is perhaps one of the top ten campsites we have stayed at:

After getting rolling in the morning, some coffee, some muffins, and some more photos, we took the slow route to the Dollhouse, which is about another hour from The Wall.

Excellent trip and pictures, guys! Great stuff. Canyonlands is one of my favorite places, and the Maze in particular after my first trip in with KC a few years back. It's pretty much an annual trip for me now and will be there again in two weeks.

That is perfect! Wonderful execution and expression!
