What's new at Coyote RV/Phoenix Pop up?

Regcabguy

Oil eater.
First off, we had a gentleman come along with a nice new Dodge Power Wagon short bed crew cab, and ask if we could build a camper around his "in bed fuel tank." We said, sure, of course we can. Then he said, do you think you can still get a restroom with hot shower, casette toilet, refrigerator, stove sink, heater, generator storage, fishing rod holders, yakima tracks, ladder, steps, custom paint job, extra narrow size to fit truck tighter, extra long to come to the end of the tailgate layed down, front to back king size sleeper with SHORTENED cabover, fantastic vent, and keep it low enough to fit into my garage?

We said... sure, no problem! So we began, and here are some photos:

Here it is in the shop, about half way done.

This camper weighs 1320lbs wet (with out jacks mounted).
Great work, but with such close clearance between the cab and camper,no rubbing?

That's one of the loveliest, low profile, slim camper's that I've seen, and a comfy, civilized home from home.

I think you may need to get a better camera to do justice to your pic's.

Low Profile

I love the look of these campers! What do we give up with a low profile unit? Squeezing into a garage is nice, but does this mean we choose a blow-up air mattress? Do we choose no storage under the bed? I understand there are trade-offs, just wondering what they might be. And, even with a low profile unit, is there a range in the total height of the truck with camper? Is there a standard height for a truck, never thought about that before.

It is depressing to measure the height of my "normal" garage. Sigh. What was the builder thinking?

Thanks

You give up under bed storage with the lower profile. Because Coyote builds custom campers, if you are thinking of buying new, you could send Rob at Coyote a few garage/truck measurements and that way find out what is doable.

Short Bed Tundra Pop up

Finally picked up some good racing scales, so that we can weigh the campers, without driving them all over town!

Here is the last unit out, weighed and loaded last Friday. It has the big National Luna refrigerator, microwave, queen extended cab over bed with storage under, air conditioner, battery system, solar charger, jacks mounted, extra large table, 300 watt portable inverter, 12v outlet, and special metal topped roof vent.

Tundra 6' bed extended cab. Camper built extra short to shut the tailgate behind. Here it is on the scales:

Rob,
I notice that you use Wave heaters in some of your campers.
How are they working in higher altitudes?
Thanks

hey rob,
i've been studying this thread for quite awhile and am just beginning my own build. i have a few questions if you don't mind.
1. what is your general rule for minimum cabover clearance?
2. i've noticed offset windows on some of your doors, where do you source these doors?
3. you've mentioned before that you would make popup canvas for others. can you do these for custom campers, are they all the same 3 layer materials, and how much time would that take?
4. do you have a recommendation on the best compact 3 way fridge?
thanks for your time and all the info and photos of your work.

My customer's report no trouble to speak of, using their Wave heaters at high altitudes. Thanks for the question. Have a great night!

Hi BP, Great to hear of a brand new project... LOVE that moment when you dive in! I have answered your questions below in BLUE color.

hey rob,
i've been studying this thread for quite awhile and am just beginning my own build. i have a few questions if you don't mind.
1. what is your general rule for minimum cabover clearance? I like the cabover nice and close to the cab, like 1" if possible. This looks tight, and cuts down on the "wind dam" effect from highway wind coming up the windshield and getting trapped in that gap between the cab and camper. The only exception to this low profile I can think of is for those of us who do EXTREME rock crawling or off roading of any kind. The cab and bed articulate more severely when rock crawling and therefore the cab may bump the bottom of the cabover if you have that tight clearance. But what I recommend is go ahead with the tight clearance on your build, and then block the camper up a little higher whenever you are going heavy off road.
2. i've noticed offset windows on some of your doors, where do you source these doors? Amerimax. I can order you any size you like, pretty much, or feel free to look into a direct buy from the source.
3. you've mentioned before that you would make popup canvas for others. can you do these for custom campers, are they all the same 3 layer materials, and how much time would that take? We would be happy to have a custom sized liner made for you. Yes, they are all a similar design, asside from the number, size and location of windows. You can pretty much get any length you need, and arrange the windows any way you like. Allow for about 30 days build time, plus shipping, just to be safe.
4. do you have a recommendation on the best compact 3 way fridge? Well, if you want a 3 way, then I would recommend Dometic. But we have been steering away from the traditional RV 3 way design, and moving more towards the all electric 110v/12v high efficiency refrigerators, because they are colder, faster, more dependable, and are not sensitive to levelness. Some good brands are Waeco, Norcold, ARE, and Ntl LUNA units.

thanks for your time and all the info and photos of your work. You are very welcome, any time. Have a great night, and good luck on the build.... send pics!!

suprising you share info so freely as a manufacturer, not sure if I could do that, kudos. The Raptor rig is beautiful, nice build and at only 1100lbs and 400 hp, you could see alot of country in a short period of time
