Which propane camping fire

Propane will leave a sooty residue, one of the few downsides of a propane campfire IMO. I carry a brush to knock it off before I pack it up each time, if I do this it's not much of a job to keep it clean.

Propane is only going to leave a sooty residue if the air/fuel mixture is incorrect. Else, all of our propane stoves would leave us with sooty residue every time we cook.

Probably to enhance the 'fire pit' experience, i.e. yellow/orange flames, the fuel air mixture is set to rich... A blue flame is what one wants when burning gas.

Paid a lot of attention to this thread before choosing the Little Red Campfire because it was smaller and cheaper. Now after 13 months of use I returned it because I felt it was unsafe. From the start I had trouble with the regulator not feeding gas at times. The last few months it started blowing fire out of the air intake valve. I could twist the regulator on high and that flame would go out. Down in Baja last month it go so bad I was afraid it would melt the supply hose and stopped using it. It was cleaned after each use but still would shoot flame out the bottom. Sportsman's Warehouse was gracious enough to give me a full credit even though it was way past the return period of 30 days.

Now I guess I will look again at a CFIAC.

I live in a Townhouse and we really don't have a yard so... Our driveway enters on the backside to the garage so...we call it our big patio. When we moved in I bought a small wood burning fire pit because we had lived on base for 5 years and weren't allowed to have fires so having a night time fire was big on my want list. Anywho after moving and tripping over wood in the garage a few months I ended up with the Camp Chef Redwood. This thing is AMAZING and really puts out some heat. It will be nice to have this summer when the fire bans start popping up for sure.

The new March/April issue of Toyota 4WD Owner magazine has a good article on the CFIAC in it.
They were very happy with it.

Just ordered the CFIAC today. They threw in the storage bag and shipping for free.

I just got one a couple of months ago, works well and very well made, worth the extra cost in my opinion. You will love it!

Friend of mine, Strega, has one and I've sat around his many times. Always was impressed but the cost seemed too high. After my poor experience with the Little Red Campfire he'll probably be saying: "told ya so". :)

I love the idea of these, quite a few times we've been stuck without a fire due to bans. Unfortunate shipping to down under is ridiculous

I've been really happy with the Camp Chef Redwood. Plenty of fire, plenty of heat. I bought it about a year ago and it's been flawless. I think I paid around $100 shipped from Cabelas...if I'm not mistaken. Comes with a decent carry bag.

Is anyone aware of a smaller one?

I know they make 6" propane fire ring burners for custom applications, so I thought maybe someone might build a smaller fire ring, somethat that you could table top and maybe use with a one lb cylinder. Object is to save space, and save fuel.

I thought of trying to DIY with some stuff I have, but it appears you need to build or use a different burner setup; the ones I have for stoves all burn more efficiently (the big yellow flames you want for a campfire effect are exactly what you're trying to avoid in a stove).

Oh, and there's also this if you're in the dunes: http://www.thebeachfire.com/index.html

hot dogs, mallows etc can be roasted low and to the side on the CFIAC. A great way to clean the CFIAC THOROUGHLY (if you have a compressor or OBA system) use a blow-gun attachment on the ceramic log and burner. It blasts the soot right off. I really dont use it for cooking. I use it strictly as a campfire. LOVE IT!!

the soot on the cook stuff did not brush off though :( was that kinda oily soot that really stuck on like glue

yeah mine was on the grate also I wonder if it has much to do with the just above the rocks height that made it worse ?

saw some things on line to keep suit easier to clean up maybe I will just stick to using the burner for the cooking and enjoy the fire for what it is :)
except marshmallows and those I will teach the kids to kinda hold it to the side of the flames ?
kinda makes me not want to roast hot dogs and such over them now ! not sure I want to be eating sooty food :) hahahahaha

I have a gas fireplace in my family room that makes no soot. It's flame is nearly identical to propane campfires. The only difference is it's natural gas, not propane. Would that be why it produces no soot?
