Checking out Navara grilles on eBay now :D

Dooo it, I always wished I could but shipping to AK is just too much $$$$. Late Nate on this forum had a Navara hood with a scoop on his 1998 Frontier, Should have grabbed it when they were up here and funded more of their trip to Panama.

Sounds like you had the 4 70 AC, 4 windows down and 70mph. Just read your blog about July and the belt. Is the SC belt and the AC belt the same belt on the SC frontiers? My AC belt tensioner bearing went out and shredded my AC belt this summer and it was squealing like crazy for two years. I still have not put a new belt on, I just don't use AC up here.

School me on this guys (if you would) . I had never thought of this until recently when I started looking at bumper upgrades. I ended up going with the TJM Bullbar and had to modify my grill and grill support.

I had noticed the Navara grill on TJM's webpage when looking at the bumpers. How much work would be involved in swapping over to a Navara grill ?

If you have not done so already, I have a pair of brand new upgraded heavy duty Tie rod adjusters.. basically a necessity if your gonna up the tire size. I never installed them on my 03 CC S/C long bed. I also have a pair of never installed low profile bump stops. Let me know if you are interested. I don't even know why I kept them lol I guess I got lazy after I sold the truck and never posted them.

As much as I loved the fact that my truck was not as common, you might think differently when you go to order parts, or get stranded somewhere and have to wait 3 days for parts to come in. Not to mention the BEST mileage I could scrape while driving under 65 mph all freeway was 15 mpg and that was with only 32 in wheels, no armor or gear.

At 100k I would deff research the Knock sensor issue on Clubfrontier.org I was lucky enough to buy my truck with only 36k miles and found out at 60k that I had a bad KS. So deff look into that. I actually replaced it on my own, and for a regular non professional it was kind of a pain in the ***.

Good luck with the truck, ClubFrontier is an endless source of info.. there are quite a few members on here as well.

I'm seriously considering it. It'd be a bit spendy, but if I had the cash to burn I'd jump on it in an instant. And when I do have it, I probably will. I'd love a Navara hood as well. I've actually given a lot of thought to completely rebadging the truck. I think that would really be the bee's knees.

Haha that's exactly what I had! Thanks again for looking, I just revamped the site so it has a whole new look. Yeah that was an interesting situation. But after that and a subsequent trip, the Frontier, or "Nancy" as we now call her, has certainly proved itself to me. I trust her completely. And yeah, they are the same belt. Luckily for me it doesn't run anything else. When your belt went did it ruin any other belts? When I first got mine, the supercharger was dead, so it spit the belt we put on it and took the others with it.

Yeah I thought about that when looking at bumpers too. I'd imagine the Navara grille would actually make the bumper install easier, because it's separate from the bumper assembly. If I recall correctly, isn't the factory bumper and grille on a Frontier just one big piece of plastic? They're essentially the same trucks, and with the exception of powerplants, the differences are mostly cosmetic. I'd think swapping the grille over would be rather easy.

Thanks for the offer, but I've got those already. I can understand what you're saying about parts availability, but this doesn't even concern me in the slightest. Part of the reason I bought the truck was for the reliability, so I wouldn't have to worry too much about that sort of stuff. I carry enough spares to replace the "fragile" parts, and the rest of the parts have proven themselves to be more than stout enough many times over by other people who have run these and Xterras. These trucks are tough. To be honest, if I'm in a position where I'm gonna have to wait a while for parts for a Nissan to come in, then I'm far enough away that any vehicle I'd want to run would make me wait. Of all the things I've considered running, the Frontier is actually pretty much at the top of the pile in the parts availability department. If Co-Opski can successfully run his Fronty in Alaska of all places and have little trouble, I don't think I'll run into many issues. :)

The funny part about all this is you're talking to a guy who used to run a Land Rover DII. :) The Nissan is a cakewalk.

Fuel mileage is way above all my previous rigs: 1990 Suburban (350), 1979 Chevy K20 (MEAN 350), 1988 Chevy 1500 (350), 2000 Ford F-250 (V10), 2001 Land Rover Discovery II (4.0). :D

Knock sensor is good to go, recently replaced.

Ran into some issues trying to install my AC shackles today. Turns out, they're too narrow to use with Energy Suspensions bushings. They will not slide over the bushings because the bushings are wider than OE ones. Too bad, really. I'm going to have a friend chop them apart and widen them a little so they'll work.

In hindsight, I could have just had him build the shackles in the first place instead of paying the $65 + $24.16(!!!!!!) for shipping. Oh well, live and learn. :)

So, it didn't come down to cutting the shackles apart. We stuck them in a vise, put a big crescent wrench on them, and gave it a sharp pull. This widened them up just enough so that we could make them fit. And after doing the measurements, I'm sitting at exactly 2.5" of lift in the back! And since I haven't reindexed yet, I'm sitting a bit high in the back. My friend refers to it as a "stink bug" now.

Installing the shackles was dead easy, I'll have some pics later. But the weekend included a hell of a sightseeing trip!

For two weekends in September every year, my town's Home Builders Association holds an event where they show several newly constructed houses around the city and outlying areas. This is kind of a fun event, because you get to go around looking at these houses during the weekend. At each house, they check off your ticket. If you go to a certain number of houses, you are entered to win a prize. So that's how I occupied Saturday. On Sunday, though, my girlfriend and I went to see one of the houses built in Red Lodge, a mountain resort town (a nice and short 45 minute drive from my house!). Since we were there, I took the opportunity to explore up a trail a little ways and make our way up one of the most scenic roads in the US.

This is Hellroaring Road, a trail that's not so much technical as it is rough and rocky. It winds about 8 miles up the side of a mountain and ends up at a plateau about 9,000 feet above sea level. We made it about 3 miles before I realized I had left my tire iron in my garage :( So we turned back.

This is one of the smoother parts of the trail.

And these are from the Beartooth Pass, a scenic highway running between Red Lodge, MT and Cooke City, MT. Cooke City is the northern gateway to Yellowstone NP.

Here you can see a section of the trail we were on earlier.

Wow great scenery, I can't even find a dirt road within a half hour of my place, its the sad truth.

Do you have your tires on yet? Doenst appear so.

The frontier shackles must be different than the Xterra, pretty sure mine were two piece units.

Yeah, I'm pretty lucky out here. Montana is a gem. I found a few more trails while I was along the Beartooth Highway, so I'll be checking those out. Hopefully, before it gets buried in snow, I'll make it up to Hellroaring Plateau. The other trails will have to wait until next summer, unfortunately.

No tires yet, waiting on those until I get the front finished up.

These shackles are basically 2 pieces of (I think) 1/4" flat strap with a chunk of 1" square tubing holding them together.

The factory ones are two-piece.

Here's what they look like on it.

And the new stance

Right on man, nice truck, look forward to seeing what you do with it.

Thanks man! I'm excited to keep it moving forward. It's nice to be able to spend my money on mods instead of fixing it constantly. Nice change from my LR. :)

Beautiful pictures, I was at the other end of Yellowstone over the summer. Nice progress on the fronty too, what are the plans for the front end?

Near Jackson? That's quite the scenic area too. I don't get out there often enough anymore. We're lucky over here in Montana, we don't get so many tourists, and we keep our good trails close to the chest, so many of them are rarely traveled.

Thanks! I'm enjoying all the things I get to do with it. It's been a learning experience. For the front, I'm going to reindex as high as I can safely go. I'm hoping that I'll get at least 1 3/4". That'd probably be enough for me. If I could get closer to 2" I'd be ecstatic, but we'll see. In order to get that I might have to get different UCAs. While I reindex, I'm going to do a steering stabilizer kit, idler arm brace, and HD tie rod adjusters. That should make the front end as tough as I'll need it to be.

The rear end isn't quite 100% just yet. I need to add new, longer shocks pretty badly, and when I do I'm definitely going to need to modify brake line and ABS cable brackets so I don't stretch/break them on full articulation.
