Dust!

Shocks through the bed would be nearly impossible to seal well and everything would get dust on it like you had an open bed.

It would take some work, but you could make it dust proof.

Just envision this, but out of steel sheet metal, welded to the bed, with dust proof access doors to get
to the shock's hardware if needed.

Or he can canti lever the rear shocks, if Zam is wanting to go long travel. I think Engage makes a kit.

Pulls 17" of travel without cutting the bed.

What's your average mpg in this truck?
I'm looking at buying the same truck (double cab 4x4) and have been curious how much of an improvement it will be over my 100 series.

I doubt you would see much of an improvement, once you start modifying the Tacoma the MPG drops more than I would have liked; I don't really ever track it anymore. After I swap to 4.88s and a SC I will check the millage again. When I checked a few years back it was in the 16-14 range..

Halloween 2012, I was in for a scare I did not expect and one that every driver fears especially those who put a lot of blood sweat and tears into their expedition chariots. To make the story short I was making a left turn on a green arrow on my way to work, half way through the intersection I get broadsided by a Toyota Camry that ran the red light at full speed. :( Everyone made it out ok but my truck has way more than just a few beauty mark.

Rock Slider: Bent but prevented excessive damage to the core body (I have always said that they are worth their weight in gold)

Front Bumper: Saved my front end from the street sign after I was forced onto the median. Recovery points also allowed easy recovery for the tow truck.
Also could have winched myself out of the road if necessary.

Obvious carnage: tire/rim destroyed, front passenger door dented in, fender smashed, bumper “scratched”, rock slider bent, UCA, LCA, spindle, and new steering rack all severely damaged/bent.

After all this I still love my Tacoma, it protected me and even with all the damage I was still able to drive myself off the median and over to the side of the road to safety. :Wow1: All of this should be fully repairable and covered.

The good news from all this? Lets just say she will get a full makeover… I have a policy that if anything ever gets damaged or breaks I always replace it with something better.

Hope that I can have everything repaired so I can hit the road and trails again soon.

Whoa... that's crazy! Glad you're OK. Looks like the slider totally saved your cab... that would have been deep into the rocker/a-pillar area.

Thanks Doc! Feel like the sliders saved the insurance company some money and not me ha, but I am glad the body and frame seem to be fine. Everything else is just bolt on and can be replaced.

Where's the picture of the Kentuckymobile that hit you... guessing it's a write-off?

The car that hit me was bleeding all over so I doubt it will ever be seen on the road again. The front end was fairly smashed.. but this just reminds me why I don't have a motorcycle, no matter how good of a driver you are a woman doing her makeup can still take you out

Now I just need to figure out what I should replace all the damaged components with.. I have always been leaning towards doing a SAS but in this case a Long Travel kit would work very well. I am taking recommendations!

Glad you're okay and the damage not too bad. Maybe time for a long travel front end by AllPro?

I don't believe All-Pro makes an LT kit for first gens, but I have been looking at Total Chaos or Camburg. Their kits seem super though and it would be nice to have stronger Tundra CV axles. Will most likely have to do some fiberglass fenders, I am not a huge fan of the look but I need to replace both anyways. The shop said they can do some custom glass work so I can keep the snorkel.

Wow Derek! Glad you're ok! Also glad the truck is not a goner!

Can't wait to see what you do with it!

Thanks! You know you can't kill these trucks! Reminds me of Top Gear when they try to destroy the Hilux :ylsmoke: I was amazed I could still drive after that impact.

The repair has now been authorized by the insurance company. My truck is going to be "Built Right" :wings: maybe I should sign up for the Dakar Rally next year :ylsmoke:
