I don't think there's really any year to stay away from, they're all pretty much the same. I would recommend finding one with the 5.7 v8 instead of the 4.6 or 4.7 just purely on a available power standpoint. A couple things to look out for; water pump leaking-seems to be fairly common, cam...
I would go for a 2nd gen double cab tacoma or a 2nd gen double cab Tundra. The aftermarket support for either one is pretty good and either one is comfortable on long drives. The 2nd gen Tundra with the 5.7 will have plenty of power for just about anything.
I somehow just found this build, very nice! I'm hoping to outfit my Tundra much like yours in order to take it on some longer camping trips in the future.
I would swap in a 3.4 and matching transmission if you can do the work yourself.
If not, I would try to find a nice 3rd or 4th gen 4runner and sell that 2nd gen. My 4th gen has been great to us over the years and miles, I'd definitely buy another!
I run 6112's on my 4th gen and Icons on my 5th gen. Before the 6112's, I ran 5100's on my 4th gen for around 90k miles. The 5100's served me good initially but as I added weight to the 4runner and started adventuring on more difficult and/or fast trails the 5100's just couldn't keep up at all...
Very nice 4Runner you scooped up! I definitely like the rack! I've had my 4th gen for 11 years now and it's been an amazing vehicle. I'm in Grants, btw.
Interested to see where this build goes. I had a '92 Z71 extended cab years ago that I loved. It had a 350 with the TBI but I added a ProCharger on it and it would scoot. Mine had the 5-speed manual so I didn't worry too much about the transmission. I always wanted to LS swap it but sold it...
That could've been my post. About 4 years ago I replaced my faded, pitted OEM headlights with some ebay headlights. They look just like the OEM housings but painted black, when new they looked great. The projector isn't the same quality as the OEM projector and the light pattern is a little...

I take it you're ordering an XL package, probably the same package I'd get as well. I do believe you can order bucket seats with a console compartment, or at least were allowed to in the past. Do you plan on upgrading and upsizing the tires? If so, I'd go for the 4.30 electric locking rear...
The prices are ridiculous but I do think it's cool to see this kind of factory support. It would be nice if GM would come out with a legitimate fix for the air bags randomly going off or at the very least warranty them when they do go off.
I agree. To me, the Dakota was the mid-size, Dodge even had the Raider which was their mini-truck that was around the same size as the Hilux/S10/Ranger. The Dakota was the first mid-size, then we had the T100. The early Rangers were definitely not a mid-size truck. Everyone here probably knows...
