Just saw this thread. I'll give it a go next week from north-central Washington.

    F150 Full Size Storage

Nice. I'd like to do something very similar. Do you know how much it all weighs?

    Kenwood Yaesu or ICON

This is a discussion that fill a fill up a whole book or webpage. You could spend a lifetime in search of the perfect antenna! Generally you want to mount your antenna on flat metal surface to create a ground plane or counterpoise. A lot of dual band (2m/70cm) antennas are naturally flexible so...

    Kenwood Yaesu or ICON

Yep, each of the "big three" ham radio brands make excellent radios. You can't go wrong. The bigger decision is what bands do you want (2m, 70cm, 6m, HF, or some combination thereof), and what features do you need. That 2730 looks like a really nice radio and would be perfect for a mobile...

    Personal Emergency Experience Last Night

Great story and good to see you on THIS forum Jerry. What repeater was this on? Don't be a stranger, check in on our repeater system sometime. It's always good to hear you. K7EHT

What's your number one most useful cooking item?

10 inch cast iron skillet. On the road we use it for everything including cooking on the stove top, as a baking stone, and a cookie sheet.

Boring Hams Talking About The Weather

You make a good point about Chinese radios but I'm not sure if I understand the rest of your reasoning. There's another argument for becoming a ham operator vs using a non-licensed frequency in the same band. The process of becoming a ham is an educational process. Ham's learn how radio...

Boring Hams Talking About The Weather

There are some stereotypes about ham radio operators that tend to be true, but that doesn't mean every ham radio operator is a crusty old man. The only thing all ham radio operators have in common is that they think radios are fun to play with. You'll also find that different bands have...

    A short expedition

More of an expedition than some of the yuppie vacation photo albums I see on here :lurk: Would have liked to see more vehicle shots though. :ylsmoke:

My Taco Phoenix Pop Up Camper

Wow, great thread. Thanks again for posting. I was excited for you when I started reading the thread and now I'm upset for you. It's hard to believe a company like this has managed to stay in business. On the plus side, your camper looks great! I hope you resolve the little issues that are...

    Pictures of ham installs?

Mine is nothing special but here goes: Icom F-5021 (2 meter), with external speaker. Hard wired to the battery (both + and -) using 10 gauge wire. On this rig I run a Larson NMO mount 5/8 wave whip mounted to the fender. I'd put it on the roof rack but I like being able to get in my garage.

    Repeaters and routes/maps

Your post reminds me; I'm going to be traveling to Boise next month. What are the popular 2 meter and 70 cm repeaters down there?

    Opinion.. Yaesu vs icom

With the 880H, you're paying more for the D-Star capability. I'm looking at that radio too, but only because it has D-Star. We have a local D-Star repeater. If I didn't care about D-Star, I'd probably spend the money on a dual band-dual receive radio, or save money and get the 7900. Both Icom...

    Repeaters and routes/maps

There're many sites out there with repeater maps. This site has what you're looking for; a route planner: http://www.repeaterbook.com/repeaters/travel.php . More often I use repeaterbook's droid app: It searches for and maps repeaters based on your exact location. It's free and works well. But...

Should I go dual or just 2m?

There are lots of good points and good recommendations here. I'll add a few thoughts: First, you can probably see by now that you'll eventually "need" more than one radio. No one radio does everything. As you get more into the hobby, you'll get ideas on you're next purchase. Second, I would...

    Reccomendations for a rig

As a licensed ham operator, you can use ANY radio on ham frequencies, so long as you're within "good amateur radio operating practice". In fact, you can even build your own radio from scratch and use it on the ham bands (people do). The radio restrictions and type certifications apply radios...

    The Strap and Crap

Hilarious and insightful comments everyone. She is $400 closer to her $12,500 fund raising goal today. I wonder if the Strap and Crap will ever make it into production. :coffeedrink:

    campsite pics..lets see um

From the top These photos are from our trip up to Calispel Peak, in remote northeastern Washington. The peak is about 6800 feet, and the campsite was just down the ridge from the peak. We had great views of the Pend Oreille river valley to the east.

    Random dog shots

Okay, I'm relatively new to pet photography. But because my collie, Abraham Lincoln, is so cute, I thought I'd throw some recent pics up. These are photos from his first back country ski trip last weekend. At seven months old, he did great.
