I would argue that putting the vents on the roof would have them iced up nearly all the time, as compared to underneath the van, provided it's not in the wheel well. The roof will be wet with snow or rain any time it falls from the sky right? The bottom of the van will always be shielded by...
Just went back to page 3 to see how the axle was mounted. Is it on stock leaf springs? Shocks for damping? How did you get the lift to mount the 35" tires?
I would think you'd prefer to pull air from down low where it's cooler, like a floor vent away from the hot exhaust. Once the van has been parked and cooled down, there's a shady area underneath that would be cooler air to pull in to the van. Also, consider the distance between the roof vent...
Coil overs are nothing new, I wouldn't worry too much about the threaded body corroding. It's anodized and if you drive in the salt hose them off regularly. If you drive in the salt everything is going to turn to garbage way too fast anyway. I'd prefer the packaging of coil over vs a separate...
Do you have any full photos of the rig after the wrap? Curious to see how the flared front fenders look after they match the rest of the van. Keep up the great work.
This is a pretty sweet conversion van. Nice overhead cabinets, low miles, the side windows in the back have the screened portion so you can open them in areas with bugs, it has a roof vent already, quick release seats and it's priced OK.
Yeah I didn't know that until I looked into it. I did regular black POR-15 for a base coat and then two coats of POR-15 brand's silver top coat. The top coat didn't leave nearly as nice of a finish as the regular stuff. The regular black looks like it was dipped in glass and the top coat is...
I have the 5.4 V8 with 3.55 gears in an extended body, 24" high top with WeldTec 4" lift. Unloaded it's fine power wise. Loaded with 1700 pounds of gear, two people and full fuel she's a little underpowered or undergeared. I've been debating on changing gears and tire size or just changing...
Finally got my bumper from WeldTecDesigns painted in POR-15, polished the aluminum skid plate and replaced some of the skid plate hardware with stainless steel. Now I just need to wire the solenoid, mount the aluminum fairlead for the synthetic line and spool it on. I almost needed it...
Installed my WTD steering stabilizer kit the other night. I painted the attachment pieces in POR-15 before the install. I only had time to drive it around the block so standby for a review.
I hope you have the opportunity to put many more miles than that on the next prototype, in the dirt. Torture test the setup thoroughly before offering it to the public. You only get one chance at a first impression.
I'd put 33" tires on. Big sidewall to make up for the lack of suspension travel. A couple extra pounds of wheel and tire wouldn't worry me, even considering the extra leverage with a larger diameter.
Glad to see someone tackling a 4WD conversion for the first gen Sprinters. Sad to see the test bed going away so quickly. Will you be doing the whole conversion over again on another Sprinter right away? A kit like this is long overdue, so I hope selling the prototype moves the business...
I dug my front receiver mounted winch in the sand a couple times. Mine is lifted 3.5" in the front. I've since added a prerunner style winch bumper from WeldTec Designs that really improves the approach angle, as well as the image.
Another vote here for the fixed high top. All those quick in and outs from day to day are much better when you have full standing height. I also use that interior space full time. Kayak paddles, shovel and broom get stored along the walls and the big shelf over the front two seats is where my...
