I think a D44 would be fine under a gas engine but not diesel. My cummins alone weighs over 1000 lbs so I'm not even considering a D44.

Depends on how much time you have.. These older 4x4 vans can be bought for cheap, but then your stuck with that year suspension. depending on the transmission, you may need a new Tcase. If you luck out and find the same trans in both your in luck and Id go for it if you can get it cheap.
