Tires - how aggressive do I need to go?

I'd go with BFG AT or similar, as said above. All my Toyotas have come with various all seasons, and I have found them lacking just about everywhere except pavement, all have balled up with mud and become nearly useless on muddy roads. On the other hand, I have also ran BFG MT, MT/Rs and Toyo...

Finally, someone did it! You are my current hero. Lets see this thing finished up and with interior shots!

Old Toyota RV body on newer Tacoma truck.

I'd bet it was a Sunraider 4x4. I have seen 2 extra cabs, but they were both 85s with the solid front axle. I offered to buy one on the spot, unfortunately, the owner liked it as much or more than I did. Also seen an 83 4x4 Sunraider parked at Doheney State Beach. Amazing rigs, they are on my...

Tacoma manual versus auto tranny economy, real world

I've had several different 3rd gen 4runners with the 3.4. 2 autos and my current manual 99 SR5, and my family has had an 02 SR5 auto since new. The 96, 97 and 99 were set up exactly the same, same wheels, same 265/75/16 BFG mud tires same Yakima roof rack with fairing, driven by the same driver...

    Expo seating?

Did you look at Corbeau? They are fairly low priced. Maybe these or their Baja RS http://www.corbeau.com/products/reclining_seats/moab/

    Expo seating?

I dumped the stock bench in my 97 Tacoma when I had it for a set of Corbeau race seats. If I did it again, I would go with something like the Baja RS seats posted above. The race buckets were more supportive, but a chore to get in and out of in a truck that was high off the ground.

Greastest Range - Single Tank with the 5VZ?

I'm lucky to get 260 out of a tank, but I have never put in more than 16 gallons. Took about a 2 MPG loss when I put on mud terrains, and another 1 mpg with the roof rack. My 5 speed also gets worse mileage than my auto did on the freeway as I'm turning ~2800 RPM at 70. If I stay under 55 I can...

    1998 4Runner

Love my 99 5 speed:sombrero: No locker, but it's not a deal breaker. Much easier to swap in a locking axle than swap to 5 speed!

    Post up your drawer/storage system

Where did those recessed tie down hooks come from? I've been looking around and can't seem to find a decent black flush mount hook.

    99 4runner question

There's a ton of threads about this, look around. If it's worth 4500 to you, buy it. It's not a bad price in my opinion.

    '99 4runner rack questions...

Yep, I had Thule racks on my first 2 4runners and Yakimas on this one. Your cross bars are fine, they should be about the right width. Unfortunately, those are also about the cheapest component of the rack:Wow1: I got most of my rack accessories from Craigslist, but always end up getting the...

1st Gen 4x4 Trekker build *opinions needed*

I think all 85 4runners were 4.10 from the factory. 300 bucks is an ok deal for both in good condition, the 84 and 85 fronts have the good full length gusset from the factory. Not many people are looking for 79-85 rears, 86+ is 3" wider and those go for 100-200 bucks usually. Why do you say it...

1st Gen 4Runner Onboard Water Storage

It would be nice to get a tank without fittings or holes, so you could use the exact location and fittings that you wanted. It would make inlet hose routing much easier. It's not hard to put in your own. Get yourself a marine flush mount water fill from West Marine, some tank fittings, some PEX...

    Earth1's 86/01 4Runner

As an owner of both a 1st gen and a 3rd gen...I think that is awesome! I love my 84, but the 99 is WAY better when it comes to drivability. I drive the 84 around town, but long trips are always in the 99. On the other hand, my 84 looks way cooler:sombrero: You win, sir.

1st Gen 4Runner Onboard Water Storage

What about putting one in the stock spare tire location? If you dropped the spare and moved it to a swing out tire carrier, you could fit a good sized poly water tank in its place with a little work.

    Swapping seat rails q's

I don't know how the inside rails attach on bench seats, but my newer 4runner buckets had brackets that didn't go as far back. I unbolted them on either side of the cushon, and bolted my stock 84 rails on as one unit. I've never tried to drill out and reweld brackets, all the toyota trucks I...

    Making progress

As far as I know, the Tundra never came with a diff lock. Limited Slip, yes, I think all TRD packages did, but I don't think they were ever offered with an electric locking differential.

1st Gen 4x4 Trekker build *opinions needed*

The more I look, the more I realize your suspension setup is 100% funky. I'm guessing it was put on before I was born, I've never seen those weird bolt on brackets for the double steering stabilizer, and what I can only assume is supposed to be some sort of truss, connected by weird u bolt...

1st Gen 4x4 Trekker build *opinions needed*

Nice Trekker! I'm very jealous. I wanted one of those, but never could find even a 1/8th decent one! I settled on an 84 4runner instead and love that too, but the trekker is just too cool. Hmm where to start...maybe with some of the things I have really enjoyed on my 4runner...

    Considering 3rd Gen 4Runner...Advice?

True, my first tacoma was a 2.7 with 3.58 gearing. That thing was a serious turd with 265/75/16s at any altitude. The difference between 4:10 and 4:30 was negligible on my not-so-finely tuned butt dyno and MPG figures. I swapped my 96 after a year and a half with 265/75s and 4:10s to an...
