2010 Toyota 4Runner...or Toyota Highlander?

They need to get back to building Trucks!

The Highlander is much more curvy and bulbuous. The 4Runner does have some of the cues, but it's boxy and chunky. They DID get back to building trucks, and the 4Runner is it.

For some reason those Jeepers love the new Grand, even though it looks like a bloated bulbuous 90s marshmallow minivan. Someone posted a pic of the 4Runner, and it created a bandwagon effect of people bashing it for being "ugly". I'm having to defend it for looking like a truck.

when i was at the local dealership today picking up some parts, i asked a sales woman what the ETA is on the new 4runner. she told me that they are at the port, but a mixup with the trailer wiring harness is holding them back, and they are working to find a solution.

better hurry up and get here, otherwise im going to end up getting a ford expedition!

2010 4Runner

I agree with you winkosmosis, the new 2010 4Runner is Toyota’s new 'truck'. While their are some styling cues I don't care for/need to grow on me, over all it looks taller, more squared, rugged, and truck-like than my 4th Gen 4Runner.

More important is what Toyota has done with the chassis and 4x4 features, as beauty is more than skin deep when it comes to mechanical things. I have a feeling this utility vehicle (I like the old school name over “SUV” for real 4x4s) will be supported almost immediately and more throughly by the off-highway aftermarket than the 4th Gen. Is it lost on the Jeep guys that this rig has a frame, instead of a unibody like the new Grand Cherokee? I know, love is blind ☺

Highlander/Company Look

It took a while to grow on me but I like the new Highlander for what it is, a mall cawlin' cross-over. We are considering one as a winter daily-driver for my wife in the future.

It’s not a coincidence that the new LC200, Highlander, 4Runner, and FJC share some styling cues. I think the Toyota designers and marketing department know what they are doing ☺

Don't forget the Tundra, Camry, Corolla, Yaris... All of them have a chunky look, but the 4Runner is edgy and boxy while all the others are curvy. I wonder what they are going to do with the Tacoma.

The Company Look

Though I have yet to see a new 4Runner in person, yesterday I was watching an SUV drive straight toward me from a distance and thought it was a new 4Runner. The headlights, the fenders...

It turned out to be a 200 series Land Cruiser. I don't see lots of 200s driving around, but soon I will see plenty of '10 4Runners running about.

Happily, I have finally begun seeing some 200's running around. Oddly enough, I've seen far more LX570s!

the 200's have grown on me. They look like an updated 100, and in a good way.

Thanks, that's what was jumping out at me. Just didn't know the year to look for. The headlights still look like the new Mitsi's to me. I still don't like it.

As far as the definition of a real "off roader", my truck had AZ pinstriping when it was four days old and ran Desoto Mine in AZ with less than 2k miles on it. At less than 25k on it now, I have 2 doors, 1 fender, the hood and tailgate that are still straight. Everything else has trail rash. It's not about how much you pay for it, it's what you're willing to do with it. Just like any new model, the '10 4Runner will end up on the trail eventually, but there will be a few brave ones who are out there right away.

It's virgin run, less than 2k miles.

this might be premature but,

any reason we couldn't yank out the rear cargo and install the 3rd row seats?

On the 2004 Land Rover D2 my local dealer did this for a reasonable cost - $1500 or so

I called the dealer to discuss this but they haven't received their first models in yet. They will trickle in over the next couple of weeks - already sold and the mechanics have not yet seen one

any ideas?

Got a chance to drive it yesterday on a little test track set up by Toyota USA. From what I could tell from the short drive is the A-track feels more aggressive than the on in the FJ. The crawl control is pretty decent, however, some driver input will be needed before the crawl control kicks in.

Th interior size is nice as it dosnt feel overly large. There are quite a few componants that hang fairly low underside namely the fuel cell, front skid and crossmember.

The dials in the TE is really cool looking. The headlight and tail light corners will be a magnet for damage as they stick out like the FJ.

I just received an email from a guy who measured the ground clearance of a Trail Edition. I'm not sure if he's on this site or another one somewhere, but he made it sound like he may have posted somewhere on the Web. Surprisingly, the front diff (still the lowest point) is back to 10", which is exactly what the 2000-2002s sat at. This is very good news and a substantial move back in the right direction. I wasn't expecting that based on the still seemingly low profile in pictures.

I've been waiting for some some local dealerships to get some in so I could also take some measurements, but they don't list any yet. Will get some more numbers when they do.

In some of the pictures I have seen the new 5th Gen looks very much like a 3rd Gen when it come to stance and hieght. It's a very good thing if the 4Runner name can regain some of the respect it had prior to the 4th Gen and total mall crawler status.

The 2010 Lexus GX460 is in many ways a close cousin of the new 4Runner.
The GX460 comes with forward-facing third row seats as standard equipment.
So you should not have much difficulty installing 3rd row seats in the 4Runner.

(The GX460 also has V8, 6 speed trans, and KDSS standard!)
