Apple Tablet: iPad

Wife really enjoys her 1st gen iPad. Don't think she would make use of the upgrades.

I'm looking to ditch smart phone for dumb(?) phone and get iPad 2 to replace. Cost of base iPad is less than retail on many smart phones.

Suppose with thinner case it will still work in RAM holder?

For my needs the new features of the gen 2 are... ehhh, not so compelling or ground breaking.

Not doing video conference with my laptop which I'm on constantly so when would I do it with my ipad.

Perhaps the faster cpu and gpu will be a benefit with future apps.

Features that I would have liked to have seen?
- USB port instead of the Camera Connect Kit dongle.
- Wirelessly sync (WiFi or bluetooth) w/ my PC
- Sirfstar III gps in the 3G or even WiFi model

yep, basically a non-event. Sure the new generation is better, but does not provide any improvement for the way I use my current iPad.

Yep, I'm very happy to have had my iPad for nine months -- I've used the daylights out of it, and waiting for Gen 2 wouldn't have changed any of the ways I use mine.

reviewers who have seen the iPad2 are "blown away" with the speed improvement

better graphics: iPad2 = up to 9 times faster than iPad1

on board cameras: iPad2 = 2, iPad1 = 0

colors: iPad2 = black or white bezel around the screen, iPad1 = black

3G carriers (USA): iPad2 = AT&T or Verizon, iPad1 = AT&T

1080p output: iPad2 = yes, either a video or a mirror of the iPad screen
...iPad1 = no (480i output available, no mirroring unless jailbroken)

However, the iPad1 is now $100 cheaper. :sombrero:

The iPad1 with 16GB of memory and WiFi only costs $399, while the similar iPad2 costs $499.
The top of the line iPad1 with 64 GB memory, WiFi and 3G costs $729, while the similar iPad2 costs $829.

I've been waiting for iPad 2 for a few months. I hope to pick one up Friday before we leave for a cruise on Saturday morning.

Question: I plan to only prepay for cell service on trips. I like AT&T's plan and speed better, but I'm leaning toward the Verizon version thinking it would have better coverage in places like National Parks & remote areas out west. Which would you get?

I have Verizon on my phone and while I wouldn't switch to AT&T any time soon, I don't know that it necessarily has better reception in remote areas. From what I've seen, nobody has cell service where we usually wheel and if anyone does, it will be a toss up between any of the various nationwide carriers although I suspect a phone's antenna may have just as much to do with who has reception and who doesn't as the service provider. :ylsmoke:

Voice coverage is nearly identical, but Verizon has significantly more data coverage than ATT. Still, once you get away from major roads your coverage gets spotty no matter who you have.

I spent a night on Hunt's Mesa last spring and was able to talk to my wife from there, with my Verizon Droid.

The Navaho guides liked my Droid, and laughed that the iPhone from AT&T was useless in Monument Valley as there was no AT&T service at all.

AT&T is completely useless in the Southwest! When I first moved here I had Sprint and the guy I work with had AT&T. Neither one of our phones worked, even in the city! My Verizon phone had converage in Beef Basin! (Not that I really wanted it to) If you plan on traveling off the beaten path in the West, Verizon is it.

I won an I Pad at work the other day. They are actually just going to give me a gift certificate for $535. Not sure if I should get an older model with the 3G option or if I should get a newer model withoout it. Really dont think that I will use the 3g but it would be nice to have the option but have a hard time justifying the cost difference for it.

Basically i think that I will use it at home and on the train. Not much at work since I will already be in front of the computer. Photo Storage and Movies and Music. Any Advice from other users?

The 3G version also gets you GPS. Hard to envision really leveraging the iPad without a GPS...at least from an Expo point-of-view.

I believe the the 1st gen iPad is only being discount $100. The new version is probably easily worth the $100 bucks in the long run.

Good to know! I hope to go back to Needles and and spend some time in Beef Basin this summer.
