CAPE YORK IN A CANTER

Hi All.

i am keen to do a trip to Cape York in our Canter. We did the SRW and parabolic set up with ATW. We almost have a camper sorted. But for some reason i am being a bloody pansy. Years ago i did the whole trek around the australian coastline missing the north qld coast. i did this in a standard 4wd. Gibb river rd, bungle bungles, pilbara while towing a camper trailer and no fear. A few less hairs this time round and what seems to be a well set up truck and it's like ive lost my manhood. Any suggestions for preparation? Any places worth avoiding?

I just bought a hema map of cape york and it has my full attention.

WHEN????

......another ExPo member here is planning the Cape in his Canter soon too.

The most knowledgeable guy on Cape York in general and regarding touring preparation of a Canter for that region here on this forum would be Engineer....hopefully he'll chime in.

Regards
John.

just do it, and don't be a wus and do the development road
Aussie Iron did it not so long ago and looked like he had a ball
I did it in an old Hilux back in the early 80's
didn't get as many travellers on the track back then
you'll find that with your truck you'll spend more time sorting out others problems
one tip though, take your own rated recovery gear
you'd be surprised how many rough tough land cruiser drivers wont use theirs on something that big

Good advice stu. I will post pics once the camper is sorted. It's no warrior. It's more Neanderthal than warrior. Maybe I should start a competition for naming my camper! (sorry John)

G'day Ben
we did Cape York 2 years ago with our Isuzu NPS and if you don't attempt to do the Telegraph Track and go up all the way on the Developmental Rd you will not have any problems, especially with parabolics and singles. Try to go end of May or very early June, the roads are not chopped up yet , not much traffic and the camp grounds are half empty. Up on the Cape, stay at Punsand Camp for a few days, it's a top place. You will find that after June 20 (school holidays) there will be a constant stream of 4x4's coming up, they are all in hurry because they are on limited time, the camping places fill up very fast and the roads deteriorate (corrugations) very quickly.
Just have a good time

Hi Ben,
We did the trip to the Cape last year up the OTL and it was a ball, your Canter is more than capable to tackle this trip. Take the usual spares (fan belts ,hoses, fuel - oil - air filter, duct tape, fencing wire [might need to tie stuff up] 2 spares tyres even if the second is not on a rim, enough oil for an oil change ). You will need to close up the drain vent on the bottom of the air filter housing and I extended all the gearbox - diffs and fuel tank breathers to increase wading depth. A winch is certainly nice but I never had to use mine but yes you need to have some way of self recovery if need be. My trip thread is here http://www.expeditionportal.com/forum/threads/81539-We-Canter-ed-to-the-tip . We are hopeing to go again this year end of July into August, this will depend on my brothers work schedule. It might end being later. An invite to come along may be forthcoming.

Dan.

LOL,
I could re write Ron Moons book here... PM me, I'll give you a mobile phone number. then text me when you have time and i'll call you back.
We need to sit down before you head up and have a coffee. too many tricks and hidey holes (not that i will broadcast any secret spots i know)
3 weeks is good. longer is better.
I actually caught up with Wendy Kozicka (owner of Bramwell station) on Thursday morning in Mareeba.
She drove down and is saying the road is badly chopped up, coming from her, that speaks volumes.
But you can still drive the road!! that is bigger news.
Blah blah blah....
Like i said too much to mention here....

Just did the Cape last year (in a 100 Cruiser and Kimberley Kamper). It was a blast. Best advice I can give is go and enjoy the trip. The cape is reasonably well travelled these days and if you do come unstuck there will be people.
