The fact that all you folks can't have a civil discussion without name calling and personal attacks (who plays in more mud or deeper water) just backs up what most people thing of Rover owners . . .

I went for a couple of years as a Rover owner before becoming active on forums, and I have to admit I was really surprised at the level of animosity that arises sometimes between owners of these great beasts. My preconception was that Rover owners would be more civilized and smarter than most. This has proven to be both true and false at times, I'm afraid . . . Still a great bunch, though . . .

It's also just a great example of how not to act as a person not just a rover owner.

My 19yr old son has a 93 RR Classic, and I love to show him these kinds of threads with all the chest beating and bleating like children so he knows how NOT to act as a Rover owner.

I am reading this thread to try and learn, it would be great if there was more to learn about and less cat fighting.

Actually, this thread wasn't intended as a debate from the start.

Finally, this has absolutely nothing to do with whether a rotoflex is better than a cardan u-joint, where people off-road, or even if they ever "get out into the good stuff", whatever that means.
It's only about people posting photos with no context and making out like it's some sort of authoritative statement.

My hope was that it would "lessen" the rancor if people would just, from the start, add context to photos and/or statements.

Yes, some people like authoritative pronouncements that "xyz is a dumb idea, don't do it".
There are others who want to know why it's a dumb idea. By adding context and a little background you can cover both groups and likely have no debate at all, or much less anyway.

Obviously I failed utterly in my attempt.

If this gear set made sense to put in a rover, it would have been done a long time ago...

So, first you talk about experience. And the folly of relying purely on numbers.

Then you state that nobody has tried it, because the numbers don't make sense to you.

And never ONCE did you or anybody else state WHY in your experience it was a bad idea.

Here's the problem Rob, you've been dealing with LR as a hobby for what? A couple years...It really shows how egotistical you really are. Do you think your the first one to swap a manual in for auto? And now that you've done this realitively easy swap, that your an expert and can claim that the next evolution is a 1:1 tcase.
I'm 99% sure before you brought your great expertise and incredible knowledge base to the LR world, somebody in the past 30 years has discussed this and found thru actual use, that it really isn't a viable gear set.

Again there seems to be a need to add personal attacks....which just turns away anyone who might be interested in learning.

If you would leave out the ego comment, the "great expertise" and the "high horse" wording you might have a better chance of making a point without looking childish.

I also have to wonder about a thread that starts going in one direction just to change directions in order to rehash something that clearly bothers the parties involved.

Present your points clearly, without attacks and let the merits of the points stand, that is a debate. Personal attacks, mud slinging or in this case pics of mud driving only devalue the info presented.

I've been wondering about these load levelers as well. I have one on my 92 RRC. It squeaks as the suspension flexes. Do these things actually work, or what? Pros/Cons?

Land Rover's have been around longer than the interent, and have been being modified since their inception. For some to think that just because there aren't threads or posts about it, doesn't mean it hasn't been tried or discussed. Seriously, what's the lastest, greatest, mod and when was it thought of...if it held any water, it be available.

I agree that a great deal of the vehicle tech existed long before the internet existed, but there still are innovations out there. The NA Land Rover community can be a bit snobby about what is and isn't "correct", which can hamper adoption of new ideas. That said, the world has moved on since the Disco (as an example) was first developed, and people have started using them for purposes their designers never intended. Hopefully mankind has not reached its zenith of evolution, and there is still creative thought out there. Sometimes it's an unique application of existing tech that's the innovation.

Rarely do I see a build thread with "here's how you do it" written all over it. Rather, it's a "here's how I did it" approach, which allows for comments and constructive criticism. The debate about design choices is more valuable (to me) than the laundry list of components that were bolted on. The why is more important than the what. For instance, Brand X's bumper may be beefier than Brand Y's, but it also may affect the GVWR in a way that makes it the less viable candidate in this application.

Much like the HiLift debate (and various solutions), the "why" can be very much an individual thing. Whether you agree or disagree with the reasoning is up to you.
