Expedition Shovels

I use to carry this yellow handled shovel and axe on the rear of my rig with Fourtrek's Dual Axe/Shovel Mount.

A year and a half back or so though I switched over to the Hi-Lift HandleAll as well.
I keep it in the rig full time behind the drivers seat.
Much easier than putting on the other ones on the rear of the rack before a run to the mountains.

I had one of those folding wood handled ones in my cargobox, but I took it out after getting the HandleAll.

Great links and ideas.

I carry a simple, old round nosed shovel with the handle cut short (3 feet or so), strapped firmly to the front bumper. I prefer a full sized shovel, rather than a folding trenching tool, as if I have to use it, I likely need to move a large amount of material.

In the winter, I add a mountaineering/ski snow shovel.

One thing I think they could improve on the Hi-Lift HandleAll is to put a handle on the end of the shaft.
Either fixed, or removable and held in with the pins like they use for the head tools at the other end and in the middle to join the two tubes together.

These are reasonably priced shovels, and have proven durable through years of use. Lowes typically carries shovels like this.
If can be difficult to find a quality shovel at the big box stores (don't know about that shovel from Lowes specifically). They are usually going for lowest price and don't stock closed back shovels since many people don't know the difference. But if at all possible find a closed back shovel. On the other hand, an open back shovel is better than no shovel.

I have a standard shovel with standard length handle. I have the room on my roof rack to carry it, would a shovel like mine due or should i be in the market for a shorter model.. I also carry two show shovels in my back.

I've got a Carter's Shovel (British made in the home of steel) and a UK mil spec short handle round nose. Had both for more years than I care to think...

I think I'm going to the local Hornbach tomorrow to have a look at shovels???

A good friend of mine just picked up his new Defender 110 this past week and we're going to one of th elocal 4x4 garages near here in France soon. But I'm sure the shovels they sale are over priced..

OK, nine pages... AWESOME!!!

But, can someone show the difference between an open back and a closed back shovel?

The great shovel debate...

As an avid fan of Shovels and hand tools can i please draw anyone's attention to www.richardcarterltd.co.uk where we manufacture shovels and have done for 270 years.
you should be able to understand the Open vs Closed concept and the benefits of each.

Thanks for the read - lots of interesting information on your site. I never thought to color coordinate my shovel, but I think I will consider it when I touch up the paint on my Dormobile.

Yow! Nine pages about shovels. Who would have guessed that? And now the shovel man himself joins our community. And he drives a Land Rover. Amazing. The breadth and depth of ExPo is astounding.
