For the next few years, we plan on doing quite a few of the more popular North American overland routes, an extensive trip into South and Central America and a planned trek to Newfoundland and Labrador.

Scott,
You know that when you do come towards this end of North America and are within 500Km (that's 310 miles for you) of my home, you are obligated to let me know so I can show you arround and buy you a beer! Oh, and while you are at it, I can check out the new ride! :safari-rig:
Cheers ,

Newfoundland and Labrador are also high on my list.

Scott,
Reading this long thread there has been many opinions about your posed goals. Just another thought or two.
For additional power w/o an overt sacrifice in gas mileage (a real point @ $4.00/gallon that is taughted by labor day) is the consideration of Propane conversion or as I chose to do in running a super-charger. I still manage 14mpg city/15-16 highway w/33" and loaded with gear (4400lbs). You stated you are considering headers and an alternatively run exhaust for gas tank accommodation. Perhaps headers to twin Cats to a "t" piece that split to muffler and exhaust runs down outside the frame and exits in front of both rear tires. I have found that running a snorkel w/a supercharger is counter productive. A safari snorkel doesn't move enough air at rpms above 3500. I choice to vent to the cooler air under the fender (Kenne Bell's cool-air system is worth 13hp on my I-6 and it utilitzes this avenue). I modified my air/filter box to accomidate a closeable fresh air cap that I can close for deep-water crossings but keep open for better air volumes in normal operation.
Strongly consider your wheel width. An 8" wheel width vs a 10" keeps the face of the tire narrower and less air resistance into the wind.

Just food for thought, Scott. Best to you and yours.

And that is the key to your post, what YOU would be thinking. Do not think for a moment that I have not considered every available platform for the next two years. I do not build my trucks for anyone else but Stephanie and I. I buy and build what I like, based on the specification for the trips I have planned for the 2-3 years after the build. The XV-JP is exactly what I want to buy, own and drive for the next few years.
.

I just want to say congrats on this. When I first ran across the ER vehicles last year, that Jeep kinda struck me as "odd" but the more I looked at it, the more I feel in love with it also. I keep thinking that, this would be the perfect vehicle for me, Jules and Bubba (our Choc lab).

Now then....

I call dibs on when you sell in it 3 yrs from now! By then, I will have enough saved up to pay CASH!!!

Dual fuel systems generally add substantial weight to the vehicle, and propane tanks also take up space which might be at a premium in the intended vehicle. Also, traveling in foreign lands (especially South America) one would need to consider available fuels and the quality of those fuels. Running propane alone would require that the fuel be readily available everywhere on the planned route. Cost is not really the issue, if you truly intend to travel. But not having a needed fuel can cramp an afternoon in the jungle. Plus, I believe that the heat system in the ER draws from the gasoline tank, so eliminating gas as the fuel would require conversion of the heating systems as well, adding complexity and cost where it might not be wanted.

Supercharging an engine raises its own set of problems, and generally degrades reliability, especially if the vehicle is already pushing the limits.

Have you been in the JP? It may not be "perfect" for two people and a Choc lab. As we all know, all rigs are trade-offs of one kind or another. I've been in both Earthroamer vehicles and, despite the JP's cool design, capability, amenities, and uniqueness to the American market, the first thing that struck me was that it's quite small. Two people and a large dog would be getting crowded, IMO.

Hey Scott....

Question for ya........

With buying the new Jeep.......Does anything that Earthroamer does take away or void your lifetime warranty on the Jeep?

Thanks

Has the build begun? What's the projected date for the completion?

The build has begun... We have installed several components that may interfere with suspension changes. We are also starting to assemble the required parts. The EarthRoamer conversion is going to happen in early June.

Any info on the second battery mount? Pics would be cool to.

That is an ultra-cool EarthRoamer modification, which mounts two group 31 batteries along the frame rail and then uses a custom skid plate to protect them.

You may want to contact EarthRoamer and see if that is something they may offer in the future.
