If going with the 3" I'd swap to lockable hubs. The angle on the front cv's gets pretty steep. You dont want 'em turnin' all those miles on the highway. How does a 3" lift effect the driveshaft and pinion angle on the 2nd gens?

yup, agreed...i would also not run a 3 in. lift.the angels on the cvs will be bad. just get the ome lift and the spring change will be all the lift you need. i run a 255/85r16 with the 5spd and have no rubbing issues at all. your front end needs the down travel. All of this is moot if you want to contact Joe Darlington to fab up some diff drop brackets to correct the angels on your cvs and restore your downward travel.

John, clean trooper!

its a 98
3 in OME with spacer, stiff springs

It also has air lift air bags inside the coils. this really helps when loaded down with lots of gear

I would recommend 929 coils and 1" spacers with OME shocks and 2 inches of torsion bar turning. You will still get good travel from your suspension and not be on the bump stops constantly. You do have one advantage in that you have the longest of all of the trooper control arms allowing for a marginal amount of additional adjustment without being topped out on the suspension. I would also flip the ball joints to the bottom of the arms.
This is how mine is set up with 255/85 r16. I would also think seriously about torsion bars for the front, Your replacing rear springs you should replace the front as well.

Here is a crappy cell phone picture of this setup (mine)

(snip)

I'm running the Superwinch hubs on a '99 TOD and truth be told I would look into buying and rebuilding a set of Aisins. I'm not sure what it is about the Superwinch hubs, but they don't seem that well built. I haven't had any problems yet, but they just don't inspire confidence. I've had them about three years and it is time to pull them apart, inspect, lube, rebuild. It may have something to do with the crap that CDOT sprays on the roads in Colorado.(/snip)

I'll second that!

I'm on my second set of superwinches, I shattered a gear on the first set less than 4 months after installing them on a very moderate trail. They replaced them under warranty. The second set has now been on for about 8 months over the winter, and the outer body is corroded and the paint on the inner body is flaking and has surface rust. Not good for something installed for less than a year methinks. I don't go anywhere off highway without taking my stock flanges because I'm paranoid I'll bust another one.

The Warns are twice the price, but I'd go with them. If you can find the Asins, get those as they're solid and less than the Warns IMO.

In the following pic, the "outer" gear is stuck inside the hub. Its a bad pic, but if you look close you can see the bigger cracks at 4, 9, and 11-0'clock positions. When I pried it free (its supposed to be a part of the outer body) it came out in about a dozen pieces.:Wow1:
