New Jeep Pick Up to be unveiled...The Gladiator

Yep that's the one. I was doing the Idaho BDR last summer and that's the "Hippie Bus" just outside Burdgorf Hotsprings.

Was up that way riding single track, and bent my rear spocket...pretty much killed the weekend for riding. So I went tooling about in the truck...and drove past that thing. Thought I recognized it!

Bridge going over the Salmon was fun...was thinking...sure hope it holds the weight of the truck...as I see they are putting in a new one.

My Jeep Yj was reliable as well. Because it had nothing. No AC. No auto trans. No power windows. No windows.

But the auto trans models and auto xj's had a nearly 100% failure rate. And the rear axle was made out of wood. Soft wood. Not sure that I want a new Jeep?

Buddy of mine had a XJ...great for wheeling, but with only a 150K on it...felt like it could fall apart at any moment. We did however take it into a nasty rock strewn hole of a trail to extract a broken bike. And it took it.

His son ended up rolling it. Got $300 for it at the scrap yard. So they are worth a little sumthing. :D

Buddha.

Finally in expo white.
My neighbor has no less than three clean looking wj jeeps in his driveway, none have moved in three+ years. Jeeps are bought for emotional reasons and not for practicality. A co worker of mine continues to tell me his new wrangler on 35’s gets 30mpg...

A lot of ******** talk from a lot of people who've never seen it. 7500lbs towing for a half ton? That's not bad. I think what you all are missing here is what vehicle this is going to go head-to-head with, and destroy in the "capability" department; the Tacoma.

The diesel ZR2 beats the Tacoma in every way but Tacoma sales are still strong. The Glad offers a lot and will be good addition to the mid size truck market. Jeep people and sfa people will love the gladiator but a lot of people will will buy Tacomas. I didn't really like his until I went a small amount of time in my buddies JKR. I think the JL and gladiator are a step up from the JKR but what do I know, I'm still waiting on the Ranger.

Yes sir!

I see that 1600 lbs payload getting used for bumpers, sliders...winch...and other paraphernalia.

I have no need for rear seats. But I see it being used for storage. Have alway been an extra cab 6 foot bed kind of guy. Could make a DCSB work.

Have been mulling a DCSB for the next truck...since I tow a trailer regardless. Sub 2000 lbs too. So a Gladiator would be perfect.

Yep that payload will get used up quickly just like every other truck out there. Still it has more payload than the Taco? I would also think a extra cab/6' bed to have a little more payload potential. A extra cab with clam shell doors (like the FJ Cruiser) would make access to rear of cab a breeze, one of the many things I loved about my FJC.

Like you I have no need for rear seats what so ever, just the wifey/small dog/me and a small space behind the seats would suffice for us, easy access is a must though. A 6' bed would carry most everything I would take camping with us, all of it stuff I would not want inside the cab. The extra cab vision is probably a pipe dream though so a CC/5' bed would be 2nd best for me.

I bought a new 1984 Toyota 4x4 extra cab truck Which is 1 of 3 previously owned vehicles I regret letting go which is why I pine for a extra cab Ruby Glady.

Someone said they rather have a Power Wagon over the Gladiator is where the cost comparison is coming from.

The Gladiator is a midsize truck truck, competing against other midsize trucks.

You can’t toss 37” tires with a 2” lift on a Camry...sure a car would get better gas mileage...but as much as I “should” get a car for commuting like driving my truck better. I try to like cars...but can’t bring myself to.

Me I rather have The Gladiator for a daily do it all vehicle. Much like what I have been doing with Toyota trucks for the last 26+ years.

Me.

In the other trending, related thread, I said that a $49k Tradesman PW looks to be a better option than a $60k+ Gladiator.

And yeah ... a lot has to do with value analysis of comparable running gear.

True, ofc, a 2500 has its limitations as a trail rig and a DD. But, then so does the Gladiator.

Now, if I was to put my money on the table, the only thing I can say with certainty is I will not drop $60k on a vehicle, Gladiator or otherwise.

Truth be told I would probably balk at the size of a 2500, as the Gen 2 Tundras look impossibly huge to me too.

ZR2 looks better and better as a a brand new trail capable pick up ... if only it had a MT. sigh.

Think that is if you only option the Glad out, it will be $60K. Betcha you can grab a lower trim model in the $35K range, which is reasonable compared to other midsizes.

Never paid much attention to Jeeps, now I have been looking. Found a couple JKU Ruby's sub $35K. Like anything after the intial hype prices will come down. Remember when the diesel Colorado came out, high 30's low 40's....now you can find them in the low 30's.

Extra cab 6' bed is my favorite configuration. but a DCSB could be made to work. Towing number is better than the current JKU...which is great. Come from the mindset of towing at about half capacity. So at 7500 lbs is about perfect for me. My current truck is rated at 5000 lbs, and I keep my trailer below 2000 lbs. Tows it fantastic, forget it is even back there at times.

Keep looking at dirt bag style campers. This will haul a bike a little camping gear and still be well below the Gladiator's capacity. No need to go too far off-road with the camper. Base camp and use the truck and bike to explore back in farther.

Auto trans in the XJ was the AW4... identical (save for the bell housing) to the A340. So, those are pretty damn reliable. The 32RH in the YJs and TJs wasn't that bad. Typical Chrysler transmissions. The D35 is also long gone.. 2006 was the last one.

While true about hype pricing, the Rubicon trim JL MSRP starts in the 40's, so JT will likely still be high 40's before creature comforts.

Most likely.

Me I would buy the S model...and do my own mods. In reality...as much as 37's would be fricken ahhhsum. 33-35's work fine for what I'll do. Run 32's on the Taco, it takes me everywhere I want to go in a truck. Save the real hard stuff for the dirt bike.

Unlimited Sport starts at 43K here. Rubicon starts at near 50K..... So I think a Gladiator will easily touch 60K here....

Most likely. But wait after the intial hype goes down. "Last years" Ruby's are going for the mid 30's. Model year change helps.

Still way cheaper than an AEV Brute. Wonder if the Gladiator will hurt resale value of the AEV?

Sure do like that Filson edition. They can keep that snorkel, though.
