I will get more serious about it after returning from Newfoundland and Labrador.
If you make it to the Argentia area, take a photo of the Naval Air Station gate for me (I think it's all closed up). I was born there.
I really need to take a trip there sometime soon.

I don't care what anybody says, I like Newfies a lot. Super nice people, and great drinking buddies. :sombrero:

Guess we'll miss you by a week or so. We leave Bar Harbor June 1st. Will be in Newfoundland on the 3 or 4th, I think.

2.8 IH, 300 TDI, TD5 and V* gassers

Being an owner of a 300, a TD5, a 5.0 Rover and had in the past 3.5's though 4.0's I can say I will do whatever I can to go Diesel in the future.

I love my 300 for it's simplicity but a VVT would do well on it (and soon will :))It's underpowered and get's even more so each time I add a new do dad to the truck (weight) It could really use a lower first gear. Off road it's the same problem, with a 1.4 transfer case that nive 3.2:1 Low range is compromised, they would have done better sticking 4.1's in the diffs or better yet my plan is 4.88's and a 1:1 transfer case.

The TD5 is a hoot to drive and the electronic engine control is actually less complicated than the V8. It will run with all the sensors failed with exception of the CPS. I simple Hall effect sensor that is very similar (could be interchanged with) the Gems. I think it's a great "modern" engine that has tons of potential. When comparing my 300 to the two TD5 110's I've driven I get jealous.

2.8 IH, I've heard too many stories of problems, overheating is the biggest one that would concern me as I can get the 300 to "warm up" hauling a heavy load on a steep incline. That should be resolved by the weekend but it makes me wonder about the 2.8, I have to think that the VVT is what makes the motor, sure a 12% increase in capacity and a bit of a better head makes for about a 12% increase in power but we can do that with the 300.

The biggest benefit of the diesel in the Disco has been getting to actually see the odometer go well past 550 miles before it was time to put fuel in it! Plus it still outperforms the V8's in the mountains.

You know Mr. :sombrero:, I could really do without these mean spirited comments so early in the morning ;)

So I take it you've had some seat time in the newest "Oxcart"?

I can be so cruel... Especially before coffee!

If you think about it even with me installing it it will take a lot of time to pay this off in fuel savings, but if you deduct the $1000 if would have taken to rebuild and install another V8 (the old one was about dead at the time of the swap) it gets much easier to justify.

I have driven "OX 2" and we have an NAS truck with a TD5 conversion in it locally as well they both perform admirably! I would almost  over them but the intent of the 300 is to uber reliable and trouble free which it has over the last 20K miles I've owned it. That makes it pointless to consider a swap. Now if the truck had a V8 in it I would have a hard time deciding between the 300 and the TD5. It's the Boy Racer side of me VS. the practical old guy side.

The nice thing about the 300Tdi (not sure about the 2.8PS) is that the only electrics that are "mission critical" are the alternator and starter, and not them if you have a hill or someone to give you a short tow.

You also need a few volts to the fuel solenoid. Very hard to get runnage without that.

cheers
