Hmm boy some great photos. Makes me want to pack up the truck and start out onto the road! I have yet to make it to the Death Valley region but it looks quite beautiful. Thanks for the inspiration; its helping me through a raining/sleeting afternoon in Michigan.
One thought I had on your rack was is it possible to get the track nuts in sideways? I know on some of Yakima's earlier track systems you could put them in incorrectly and they would be far more likely to pull out. Although your tracks look narrower. It may have just been a weak batch of aluminum tracking too. Are you affixing your kayak to the roof of your truck as well with a roof pad or strap off the bow? Your system looks just like mine and as you said there are many who run this and have no problems. Good cause for a letter to Thule.
