IIRC my tent rack is about 3.5" off the lid.

One thing to consider; are you planning on carrying anything on the lid under the tent?

I can fit a fold out table underneath if I need one for events.

I would like to keep enough clearance so I can carry something on the lid if I wish. I figure that if I go with 8 - 10", I can get various things under for storage if necessary...

I'd suggest you limit the weight of any items you want to carry under the roof rack. With a RTT you already have 110 -125 lbs of weight plus what ever you can stuff underneath.

We had a customer who ordered extra high cross bars and a slide for under a roof rack. He managed to cram all sorts of things in there, tables, chairs, awnings, fishing rods, fir wood etc. I think we are all guilty of overloading trailers, stuffing things into every conceivable space.

In the end he put so much weight up there it racked the lid even after extra gussets were welded in. It also raised his center of mass considerably.

True, no doubt. But, did it cause harm simply because of the high CG? We trailered my Bantam, which is very similar is makeup and dimensions, from Alaska to eastern Oregon with a garden tractor strapped to the lid, and no problems. If you can load something that heavy that high on a Bantam, a bit of extra weight right at the lid level can't be all that much of an issue.

So I finished the lid today. It is identical to Willmans and BX's. I should have it painted by Friday and maybe installed on Monday. Then I will be in a holding pattern until after the Christmas bills come in.

Krylon Rattle can Camoflage in Olive Drab and Khaki. The tire are 235/85R16 Conti-trac Muds....? (Cheap tires...)

Ok thanks. Also about how many cans did it take you to do the trailer. I am trying to get a ballpark idea.

Not including the lid... 4 cans of Khaki, 6 cans of OD, 4 cans of rust primer, 1 can of undercoating for the frame and undercarriage.

If I'm not mistaken the body cannot be removed from the frame like the M416, it's welded...
