You might still be able to do the 4x4 swap indoors. A friend of mine has a 7 foot garage door and a 95 4runner on 1 ton axles and 40 inch tires that is way too tall for the door. He has a set of stock 16 inch steel rims with no tires that go on when he needs to do a big project and get the truck in the shop. Maybe you could have the stock tires on the steelies you have removed and still sneak her in an out?

I have done this a number of times building different Scouts as well. Heck, i'd even just just roll it outside on a set of wheel dollies or tire-less rims. I'm glad you reminded me of that little trick! :)

Well, the first 'major' project cost me about $35.00 from my local Ford dealer. I swapped out the HPOP o-rings.

1 out of 3 ain't bad....

IMG02152-20110825-1712.jpg

Naturally the bad one was the front-most, towards the front of the van...

I did this all without removing the fuel bowl, FYI. It was incredibly tricky - but with a little bit of patience and some colorful words, it can be done. I ended up making the quick disconnect tool out of a CHICOM no-brand 7/16" open end wrench and grinding it down very thin. It took a few grinding sessions to get it perfect, but once it was, the fittings just popped right off!

If you are ever going to engage in this project - I WOULDN'T recommend pulling out these little springs. I have no idea why I did it, but it took me FOREVER to get them back in their little holes.

The good news is that there are no more leaks! Now I just need to get to the pressure washer....

Scoutkid, this van looks awesome.

I'm diagonally across Denver from you in Elizabeth. Let me know if you want a hand sometime.

Thanks arz/Mo! :D I will do. You may get a frantic 'oh lord please help' PM this weekend whilst I am putting in the axles!

I hit up my favorite local junkyard this week and found a 2006 E450 shuttle van. It was, of course, missing the headlights and grill. On my quest for a cheap power inverter I poked my head inside, and lo and behold, the grill and headlights were sitting nicely on one of the seats! I didn't even have to unhook them, lol.

So I gave the Big Guy a nose job.

And since I was already that far along, I decided to get ready for my parts coming this weekend from Ujoint!!

Well - with parts headed my way this weekend, I decided to give it the old college try...

IMG02167-20110831-1648.jpg

HE FITS!

With 1.5" to spare...

IMG02169-20110831-1652.jpg

And takes up all of the shop...

There is NO WAY I will be able to get the axles under the Van, and the Van out the door. The GOOD thing is, I have some welding and cutting to do, and can get that done in the shop close to my welder, then back out and get the axles all up in there.

Parts parts parts parts parts!

The good thing about having to do the conversion outside is that I have the whole bay of my shop open to lay things out and get my axles prepped with room to spare!

So I had too much to do today to get started at a reasonable hour, but I did get started at about 6:04 pm. At 7:38 pm it looks like this:

IMG02208-20110903-1938.jpg

BAM! Suspensionless!

IMG02209-20110903-1938.jpg

Like a glove!

IMG02210-20110903-1942.jpg

And just because I have a random 35" tire laying around, the gratuitious pretend shot.

IMG02212-20110903-1944.jpg

Sadly, my springs aren't here, so after I get my front hangers on I will be sort of stuck at that point of the project.

However.. I have 2 axles to clean up and a rear suspension that can be pulled out, too. Plus I SUPPOSE I should go to a few holiday gatherings this weekend..

Also, trying to come up with a name. A person close to me came up with Vantom (like Phantom). I like it because along with sounding AWESOME, it's like Van Tom (my name is Tom). I'm an idiot...

Love the name! And you aren't messing around! I hope those springs arrive asap, I haven't got the BOM # yet...

Well I got the passenger side spring hanger drilled and trial mounted. I had to come inside and calm my nerves a bit. I truely fear and respect that 3/4" drill bit. That damn thing can mess you up bad if you aren't paying attention.

The first side took me right at about 1 hour and 30 minutes. That involved some looking for drill bits and getting everything setup. I think the drivers side will go a bit more quickly.

As a side note - I am doing this from a seated position, which I think is hard enough. I can't IMAGINE how someone does it while standing!

The sleeves work pretty slick, and if you follow Chris' instructions, you can't really mess up too badly. :)

HEY! You are supposed to be on vacation! Quit playing online.

I have plenty to do until Tuesday, then I wills start getting antsy for the springs :)

Off to grab some paint and another 3/4" bit. I just chipped a huge hunk out of mine on the 2nd to last hole...

Just a second set of eyes, looks like you have a washer doubled on the lower back bolt, while the upper is missing one.

Great progress and a great project!!
