Side-mount Jerry can holders

Initial testing with 5-gallons of gas in the jerry can on the side mount went very well. The mount supports the weight just fine and there's no rattling. It's very stable.

I'll leave the full can on for the next few hundred miles for testing and I'll go out of my way to hit potholes :).

When I got home from my test drive I did a little load testing, in this photo the jerry can is full and the two cinder blocks weigh about as much as another 1 1/2 full cans, so this is 2.5x the load it's designed for. (No, I didn't drive it with the cinder blocks on top, I don't really have a reliable way to secure the blocks up there).

Also I've had the mount on and off the Jeep a bunch of times today as I was swapping between the Rotopax mount and the jerry can tray, and it takes less than 5 minutes to remove or install the carrier, so I think it's very practical to only have the carrier installed for those trips where you might want extra fuel. That's what I do with my LJ side mounts - I don't see the need to carry fuel (or the cans) every day, so most of the time the cans and the mounts are in the garage.

Awesome! Close to 75 lbs( 1gal weighs ~6lbs )!
Will the cost be close to the frame mounted holders or lower?

More Qs - will a 50mm ammo can(M2A1) fit in the holder? It would make an awesome toolbox area.

I don't do pricing (in fact I don't work for the company that will probably be manufacturing/marketing these), but just baed on the amount materials involved they could be less, although they'll have to decide the price based on the cost of their manufacturing processes for this one vs. the others.

The dimensions of the one you linked to are quoted as 12" L x 6.75" W x 8.5" H. The inside dimensions of the jerry can tray I used are 14" L x 7 1/16" W, both of which are longer than the same dimensions of the Fat 50 can.

Tonight I had to remove one of the side mounts from the JK so I could check a few "as-built" dimensions for the engineering drawings I'm working on, so I decided to do a timed test - how long does it take to remove the mount?

Ground rules:

1. Before starting the uninstall, the Jeep has to be ready to drive. Therefore, no preparation for the uninstall could be done on the Jeep beforehand.

2. Since this was to be a timed test of the side mount removal, not a test of how long it takes to remove a jerry can from the mount or a Rotopax from its mount, the container (this was the side I had the Rotopax on) was removed before starting the clock.

3. I was allowed to have the necessary tools out of my tool bag, since I also wasn't timing how long it takes me to get tools out of my *%&$ hard-to-see-in bag.

4. When the clock stopped, the Jeep had to be ready to drive. Therefore, no other operations on the Jeep are allowed except getting in, turning the key, and driving away.

With tools in hand, I called for my lovely assistant (my wife) to start the stopwatch on her phone. When the mount was off and the Jeep was ready to drive away, I called for her to stop the clock.

Elapsed time: one minute and fifty seconds.

Since installation is the reverse of the removal process, we'll call the install less than two and a half minutes, assuming it might take slightly longer to start threading a bolt into a hole than it takes to remove one.

BTW I did this in the driveway, and it was drizzling.

Back to the TJ... I made up a test "universal" tray for the TJ side mount - jerry/NATO/Sceptre cans can be carried in it, and it's got a high back for installing a Rotopax mount, so 1, 1.75 and 2-gallon Rotpax containers could also be carried in it.

Another use for the side mounts... carrying trail recovery gear in a handy place.

I did this to mine quite a while ago and have left it there ever since, it's extremely handy. Mine is mounted to a plate at the bottom so I don't have to strap it down, that makes it really easy to open and close real quick. If I need my Jerry cans, I just put them on the other side and the rear mount that I still have

The TJ side-mount jerry can carriers have made it into the Extreme Terrain catalog...

The spare-mount jerry can carrier is in there too...

Extreme Terrain also sells both the short and the tall can trays separately for people doing something custom, or perhaps for mounting jerry cans to a swing-away tire carrier.

Congrats!
Now impatiently waiting for the JK ones. :Wow1:

On extreme terrains site, they mention the side mount works with the JK.
I do not believe it does...... I don't want to tell them though, I don't like em.

Correct, those don't work with the JK. I'll tell MORryde and they'll tell Extreme Terrain. Thanks for pointing it out.
