The Great Camp Chair Debate

The chairs I just bought from Wally-world look exactly like the green ones, down to the plastic clip and cup holder on the end of the wooden handle... $14.95.

I bought some of the same style, I'm sure from Wally World, several years ago. They are comfy and serve their purpose, but I prefer to sit higher up. They are better as a beach chair than a camping chair, IMO.

I still use the cheapie camp chairs you find everywhere for $5 - $10 but am really tired of the front digging into my legs, as others have mentioned. Not to mention going through so many of them.

I like the "director" style posted above but all of those that I have seen while shopping do not have the cup holders. I need at least one but preferably two. And I am way too frugal (read cheap) to spend more than about $20 for a camp chair.

I have seriously considered the chairs with the folding table on the side, just still a bit more than I want to pay.

update: my chair bit the dust. i bought this chair 4 yrs ago and it has been through some good times with me, lots of campfires, several states and many a dusty dirt road.

it broke where i thought it would, right next to a re-enforcement i made a couple years ago because i saw evidence of flexing, fatigue and a small crack, at least the re-enforcement was good.

i'll consider it a good buy at $25 and am googling to find another.

Thanks so much for the report and picture. We have gone to these chairs now. I have had mine for a couple years with good success. I have since replaced the other two different chairs that we carried with the same.
We found ours at Bimart. I believe they were priced around $17. Our include a swivel cup holder below the right arm rest.
The only issue that I have had is the metal strap that retains the flap for the bottom of the seat. I lost one of the screws and the flap came loose from the bar. I was able to ziptie it together for that trip and replaced the screws when we returned.

its just these two parts on my chair that are a problem, they have a twisting moment the way the are placed and give structure to the back support. i made a simple replacement bracket from sheet steel and have been sitting in it this arvo to good success, i have access to a machine shop and i think i am going to reproduce these two pieces with a machined aluminium part.

we have one of the camp ones like Morrister showed above super comfy nice support etc.. so hoping this alps is also sturdy feeling
downside to this one is the folding is not so small ? the one I am getting seems to fold up tighter so might be easier to store ?

we have two shorter chairs the kids like and might try one of the coleman leisure one thing I like is having the wifes chair something dif so we can trade off and kinda break up the same feeling chair all the time

I have been using this coleman folding patio chair for quite sometime and it's been very durable and a reasonable price. For me it's really comfortable with a good slope for your back, ie not vertical like most chairs. It folds up nicely and isn't too heavy. I took it down the grand canyon for a 3 week raft trip and everyone wanted to use it. The beverage holder is a little weird but it works.

funny that Patio chair is the other one I want to get and try out :) thought it was called leisure ?

got my chair two days ago just tried it in the house will be a good lounge sit around the fire chair back sits back to far to be good for eating but a small inflatable pillow makes it good :) which was my hope
also with a bit of a slide down put your feet up my head is supported in the Alps which I like :) cause I hate hate hate my head not being supported when lounging
I am just shy of 6'

would be fun at a outing to have a big camp chair trial where everyone gets their chairs together to compare and try

i have been seeing that the style chair i like is pretty always called a leisure chair. campfire leisure, patio leisure, sleep off the alcohol leisure whatever your leisure activity happens to be.

a chair meeting would be kinda fun and super dorky, my wife would love me to attend that, just dont fart in mine.

Any updates now that you have the chair?

Sawyer, I used the above chair last weekend at a tailgate. Its pretty awesome. My friend who owns it, he is...big boned and says it is very comfortable. Also seemed to be very solid in construction.

Only thing is it doesn't bundle up in a nice little carry case like folding camp chairs do (or at least not that I saw). Overall, I say, procure.
