Use your new found confidence and replace the pesky heater hose. Although I have not done it, I have seen it done. It was really simple. Once the head is off, man, there it is, plain to see, in all its glory.
Good Luck!

Dale! Good to see your typing around!
Fortunately, as Dave says above, I have the 3FE and don't need to worry about the PHH as the 1FZ folks do. Small sacrifice for less power
All the parts came in from the oh so wonderful CDAN at American Toyota in ABQ, NM...top noth service from him as usual. Bad thing is though, I forgot to order a gasket, and he is off to Cruise Moab this week...luckily the local dealer ordered without hassle and it will be here mid-week.
I found, on inspection of the new parts to old, that the radiator is not OEM, nor any of the heating/cooling hoses. I ordered all new ones from Dan, so I am set. I'll take the old radiator to a local shop for repair, and set it aside as a spare; most likely the same with the water pump if the rebuild kit isnt too expensive. All the other hoses are trashed!
One thing I have started, is that with every gasket I get, I've started a template book of sorts. I trace out the gasket before I use it, label it, and put the sheet in a binder for reference, just in case.
I also received the new side castings for my XRC-10. After an eventful afternoon of winching, these were needed as the winch broke part way through the 2nd pull. The cool part is that the winch continued to function without issue for another 15 or so pulls, at one point pulling a
very load through some
very nasty stuff.
