The Utilitarian-Camper 2nd Gen Tacoma

This thread has been a roller coaster. I got sucked in with the faltbed, then teh anticipation of the camper box/flippac hybrid, then to selling it, just to find out you still own it! and that the build will keep going. I am waiting on pins and needles again. I very much want the type of box you built for your truck but without the flippac roof. definately the flat bed and the aussie style utility box with the side and rear doors. Kepp up the amazing work as time and money permits, there are definately plenty of us in awe of your ride and sucking up all the knowledge.

I find it interesting that it seems every time someone builds what would seem to be the ultimate setup for a box they seem to sell it just when they're completing it, seems to be a trend. Killer setup tho!

I enjoy the build, heck its what I do for a living. Each time I build something I take the experience of the process and apply it to the future. In this case I am working on a new design and thus the funds were needed to eventually get the ball rolling on that. But don't worry everyone Ill be sure to post pictures once I get a design finalized.

The new project.

Well as mentioned before I'm on to the new project. I learned a lot with the first flatbed and camper and I plan to build a V2 version of both. So far I'm still in the planning stages but thought I would post a few shots here for input.

Flatbed 2.0 is still all aluminum but will feature laser cut and bent panels. I now have a fairly accurate Cad Model of my truck so I'm utilizing it to help with the "body lines" It incorporates the same style stake pockets but they are now recessed into the sides for a smoother look. it will also have rear drawers for extra storage. I am a bit limited on the bed height due to the frame and wheel clearance but it should sit a bit lower then my current bed.

This has been one of my favorite build/idea threads. I am glad to see you are sharing V2 with the rest of us mortal men.

Few quick shots of how I am imagining the camper box. This one will be much lower to the truck to keep the aerodynamics for long drives. I'm currently working towards a singe hinge at the front of the camper with gas struts for the tilted roof. I have a few options to look at in that regard but trying to keep the design as simplistic as possible. The new shell reduces the amount of welding by about two thirds as it will be mostly precision bent. This allows the camper body to be made up of just two side pieces a front and a rear over door channel. (minus the doors) I will also being doing external doors vs the recessed ones from before to try and reduce the time and welding. More on that later. I am considering taking the angle out of the inside of the side panels and dropping them strait down to simplify the design again as it will allow me to fabricate the front panel, back channel, tailgate and upper hatch from just regular sheet instead of having them laser cut and bent.
