Windows 10 has arrived

Don't get too dependent on any Windows 10 features. Unless you are Win10 Enterprise user you'll have little to no choice on updates installing, even if they are known to break something.
For Windows 10 Home users, this isn't going to be an option. If a future update breaks something essential, the user is going to be out of luck.

Windows 10 Pro users will have a little flexibility; they'll be able to switch from the mainstream release to the Current Branch for Business (CBB). This will give some control over when updates are deployed. While the CBB will essentially track the consumer release, it will allow feature updates to be held back for some amount of time; Anderson quotes a Microsoft executive saying that companies will have around eight months to prepare for each new feature update. Delay the feature update any further and they'll also be prevented from receiving security updates.

Only Windows 10 Enterprise users will be able to update in a way that resembles the current Windows 8 scheme. By opting for the Long Term Servicing (LTS) branch, Enterprise users will be able to defer feature updates for years, electing to receive only security fixes during that time. Microsoft is pushing most businesses to be on either the consumer release or, at worse, the Current Branch for Business, reserving LTS for mission critical systems that truly need this conservative approach.

Aside from the issue of no choice, even it they break something, if they can add new features at any time without user input, they can also remove them.

That is a deal breaker for me.I have always taken control of updates because I do not want features I will not use.Essentially they are taking over my computer.thank you much for the heads up.

I think both. It's going to work uncomfortably well, and it will quickly become dis-used by everyone not in the habit of NOT typing their queries. Did you see the Google I/O conference keynote address? What Google, Apple (iOS9), and now Microsoft are doing with contextually aware, natural language comprehension is as scary as it is impressive, both incredibly powerful and handy, and uber creepy.

Cortana on the Windows phone is awesome, looking forward to having her on the desktop as well.

Well, the new phone specs just released from Microsoft. My wife and I are both getting new surface 3s, and 2 new 950 XL phones. Can't wait to get them. on release day.

Kojack, why Surface 3's and not Surface 3 Pro's? I don't really understand how they differ or what the advantages are from one over the other.

The surface pro 3 is a 12" screen, it has more horsepower under the hood and is about 400 dollars more expensive than a comparable surface 3. The surface 3 is 10" but still retains the 3:2 form factor which is one of the main reasons we want them, the 16:9 form factor of our asus tablets don't work well with next issue and what not. Plus, going to the surface I get full w10. Not stuck on Win 8 RT. Not that RT is bad, its better than both android and IOS tablets by a mile. Just I have a couple of .EXE programs I want on my tablet. The surface 3's fit our needs perfect. My wife only needs 64 gb of storage and I need 128gb for programs but use a USB drive for storage of files, photos, media and what not. I am running 120gb drives in my notebooks with no issues.

I was going to go with the 256gb Surface pro 3, but the bigger tablet, and double the price is not worth it IMO.

The 128gb surface 3 here is 739, the surface pro 3 with 256gb is 1599. That extra space and horse power is not worth it to me. Especially when I am buying 2. I can outfit my wife and I with 2 tablets, type covers, pens, and a docking station for a little more than the cost of the 256gb and type cover.

Makes sense. I've only ever used the Surface 3 Pro's, so pretty unfamilar with the non-pro version. Are they fast enough? The Pro I use is just barely fast enough for heavy duty PDF annotation work (Bluebeam).

Fast enough for me. I use photo editing on my asus tablet now and its good enough for me. I don't need blazing fast, just fast enough for what I need. More or less, edit photos and videos for our blog, keep up on my work stuff. that's about it.

Just installed the developer preview on my windows phone. W10 on the phone is AWESOME. I cannot wait till the Dev's jump on board and get their apps into the ecosystem. Its going to be a big year for MS next year with universal apps, A new phone that is going to be awesome, and surface pro 4. I am guessing the surface 4 (non pro version) will soon be in the pipeline too with more horsepower as well.

I've skipped Win8 altogether. Many of the Win10 / Cortana features seem a lot like the Apple / Siri offerings on my iPhone and iPads.
I did a manual upgrade install on my old self-built desktop which had Win 7 Pro 64-bit and ran into some NVidia driver trouble, although the 'generic' driver put in by the Win10 install works well enough. And also on a 4yr-old low-end Toshiba laptop that was running Win7 Home 64-. Both went quickly and work well. Both systems have only 4Gb of RAM. I did both installs the first few days after the ISO files became available for download.
My newer / current PC is also self-built and I've never received any sort of 'ready for upgrade' notification or offer. All the systems are legit installs of Win7. I'll probably wait for most of the offered 1-yr window before attempting the Win10 install on my primary machine, let all the peripheral driver issues be worked out as best they will be, beforehand.

The privacy issues were scary enough (opt out of everything, is that still enough?) but when it crashed on me the second day after the install the decision to back up to win7 was easy. I yell enough at my computer, I don't need it talking back to me :)

Cortana is much much smarter than siri. It actually uses your location and changes its attitude etc to suit the areas traditions and everything. Cortana on w10 for computers has a little icon that smiles etc, in japan, cortana bows when you turn it on. Here, it just smiles at you. Its very very intuitive. Bing a couple of videos on how MS is developing it. That's why it's not on w10 yet. They are still finishing up the code for it. should be on soon and much better than just siri talking your searches to you.

I can also tell you that if Microsoft gets the app gap closed, and allows 3rd party access, like pebble watch and other devices like that, they will gain much more traction in north America.
