sure can. My '88 is a MT - so put in transmission in neutral and the t-Case in neutral - not sure if the automatics have a neutral detent in the t-case however, so those the drive shaft should be removed. This is my '93 tugging it around with a tow bar.
Dealer only as far as I know. Don't skimp. This is an interference engine. On this past Friday the timing belt went out on my '92. Thank god not an interference engine. 34K miles since change, probably wasn't an OEM belt. Receipt from PO only shows belt being replaced, not the tensioner or...
Not sure, I've never looked. OEM might be difficult - a lot of the GEN 1 stuff is getting pretty hard to find from Mits. Quick google search showed good aftermarket support.
Some added info:
Daughters '93 SR came with dual bouncies and leather. Now they are new leather with heat added.
My '92 RS came with fixed bases and cloth. Now has the bases replaced with dual bouncies. Passenger side from '95 SR - not sure what year the driver side was from. Cloth...
$13.5k fix on an 18 y.o. truck. I'd rethink that... Price may not seam out of line for the amount of work and parts involved, but the economics don't make it for me.
Just to be clear, the smaller axles are the similar size as a Ford 9" - so not that small really. Plus I've never heard about a rear axle breaking in any of these rigs. Agreed the 9.5" SR axle is preferred.
Thats odd. From my location I can see MANY listed under Montero ('95 / '96) search "carrier" shouldn't give away all my secrets, but I'm set for now ;-)
One more tip. If your going to swap - buy a wheel to wheel because the N.A. driver side axle is a different length, and I've had a...
I bought the one in my '92 (used from a '95 SR) wheel to wheel for $300 with pump. Actually not that hard to find. http://www.car-part.com I don't have mine tied to the transfercase. Simple on/off switch. Not that hard to wire up.
Our '93 SR does not have a rear locker. If the one you are looking at has 4.636 gears, just go with a replacement factory locker solution. Much more economical even if you end up having to ship it.
I'm also searching for tires for my '05. In general from what I have found is that same brand tires (similar size) in 17" vs 16" are $50 each more expensive. I am also planning to swap on 16" wheels for winter driving...
Seats take up a LOT of space. I've got 2 Gen 2 Fronts (brown leather) , 1 Gen 2 rear bench (middle) brown leather, 4 SR gen 2 door panels (brown leather), 1 SWB Gen 1 rear grey cloth and a '98 Caravan rear gray cloth I'm hanging on to for some reason.
